On December 14, suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres attacked a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopter on its way to pick up an Italian delegation, including Italian Deputy Foreign Minister, Margherita Boniver, which was on an official visit to Arugambe area in the Amparai district. SLAF spokesperson, Group Captain Ajantha de Silva, told Daily News that suspected LTTE cadres carried out the attack on the MI 17 helicopter with small arms while it was about to land in the Arugambe area to ferry back the Italian delegation to Colombo.
