S. P. Thamilselvan, the political wing leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and its de-facto number two, was killed in a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) air strike at dawn on November 2, reports Daily News. The SLAF MiG 27 and Kfir fighter jets which went into action on the morning took precise targets in the south of Kilinochchi resulting in the death of 40-year-old Thamilchelvan and five other outfit leaders. The SLAF spokesman Group Captain Ajantha Silva confirmed that both Kfir and MiG 27 fighter jets carried out operations in Thiruvaiaru, a location three kilometres South of Kilinochchi around 6am on ‘very reliable information’, identifying the location as a meeting place of LTTE leaders. "Our pilots had taken a precise target and it was further confirmed with the LTTE admitting that Thamilselvan was killed in the air strike," Silva said, adding, "Simultaneously the fighter jets also pounded a Black Tiger camp in the East of Iranamadu." Five other leaders ‘Lt. Col.’ Anpumani alias Alex, ‘Major’ Mihuthan, ‘Major’ Nethagy, ‘Lieutenant’ Adchgivel and ‘Lieutenant’ Vahakai Kumaran were also killed in the air strike. Their meeting place has now been confirmed as an international communications centre run by ‘Lt. Col’ Alex. It was also a centre for logistics, arms procurement, fund raising and operational matters. The LTTE posthumously promoted Thamilchelvan to the self styled rank of ‘Brigadier’ after his death. According to sources this is the first occasion the outfit has promoted one of their leaders to the rank of a ‘Brigadier’. It has also declared three days of mourning in areas they dominate. Meanwhile, the LTTE chief Prabhakaran has appointed P. Nadesan as the new Political Head. The LTTE’s military spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan said that Nadesan, who is currently in charge of Tamil Eelam Police, will be in charge of the two departments from now on.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said that the Air Force will continue to track down the hiding places of LTTE leaders and launch air attacks, reports Daily News. "Our Security Forces are targeting the hiding places and safe houses of terrorist leaders to deal a mortal blow to the Tigers. They will not stop the relentless pursuit of terrorists," he stated. The Prime Minister said the Government did not want to go in for a fresh ceasefire, however, it was ready for unconditional talks, as it has always been, and added, "It is the not the Government that left the negotiating table. It is the LTTE which spurned the peace drive. Nevertheless, the Government will be ready if they want to negotiate. But we will not stop retaliating terror attacks even while discussions are going on. Our aim is to eliminate LTTE terrorism and bring peace to the country."

The Sri Lanka Air Force on November 25 claimed to have destroyed a strategic communication centre in the Kilinochchi district, reports The Hindu. The Defence Ministry claimed that the LTTE had been coordinating its international terrorist activities from the place and it was known to be a highly secured palace where LTTE leaders frequently visit; and is equipped with sophisticated satellite communication devices. The fighter pilots have confirmed the target was effectively achieved. Quoting unnamed defence observers, the Ministry said the strike would have a devastating impact on the LTTE’s intelligence mechanism since its whereabouts were kept a top secret among LTTE heads. However, the LTTE disputed the claim and alleged that the Air Force bombed a civilian settlement in Tharmapuram killing three civilians and injuring seven others.

Sateeswaran, regarded as the kingpin in LTTE's procurement wing, was arrested when he was attempting to escape to Sri Lanka on November 26. The cadre from Kilinochchi in Sri Lanka had earlier tried to smuggle 50 bags of explosive substances, including Potassium Chlorate and Sulphur, which were seized at Paramakudi on November 18, police said. Police had earlier arrested four persons - Nakulan, Nethaji, Sekar and Subramani - in connection with the seizure. During interrogation, they reportedly informed police that Satheeswaran had bought the materials from them. A hand-book on making bombs, three cell phones and jewellery was recovered from him.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief Velupillai Prabhakaran declared in his annual ‘Hero’s Day’ speech on November 27 that peace with the ‘genocidal’ government was impossible, reports AFP. "The Sinhala nation is... trying to destroy the Tamil nation. It is unleashing unthinkable violence against another people. It only desires to find a solution to the Tamil question through military might and oppression." He said, “The current government is never going to realize that the Tamil national question cannot be resolved by military oppression. All the Sinhala political parties are essentially chauvinistic and anti- Tamil. To expect a political solution from any of these Southern parties is political naivety." He declared, "Those who plan to destroy the Tamil nation will in the end be forced to face their own destruction.” Making a appeal to the international community to change its approach to the Sri Lankan government, he claimed that the world today is making the same mistake India made vis-à-vis Colombo several years ago, adds Hindu.

At least 17 civilians were confirmed killed and 37 others injured as a suspected parcel bomb exploded near a popular fashion store at Nugegoda junction near Colombo around 5.55 pm on November 28, reports Daily News. Police believe that the bomb had been placed in one of the parcel counters at the No Limit clothing store by a suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militant who had left the incident site. The No Limit store and the adjoining building were damaged by the resulting explosion and fire. “The explosion was due to a suspicious parcel bomb kept in the parcel counter of the No Limit fashion shop,” military spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told Daily News, adding, the bomb had exploded as a private security guard at the shop attempted to search a suspicious parcel kept in the parcel counter with the assistance of a Police officer on duty close to the Nugegoda junction. “… We have little doubt that this is a dastardly cowardly act by the LTTE of targeting the innocent civilians,” V.U.B. Nanayakkara, spokesperson of the Media Centre for National Security told The Hindu.

Defence spokesperson Keheliya Rambukwella said that the November 28 explosions in Colombo perpetrated by the LTTE were a clear indication that its terrorism has reached its last stage. “The two bomb incidents signify a plea by the terrorists in the face of their splintering image before the international community and the Tamil public at large,” said Rambukwella, adding, “This is the last length of the marathon to eradicate the LTTE and they are trying to do their last bit as a terrorist organisation. We can’t forget what they have done in the past to kill innocent civilians. We have had this for the last 30 years.”
