He described the meeting of the Norwegian delegation with the rebels as "serious, frank, open and very useful," and added that the international community's effort was based on two clear principles––a solution to the conflict should be found within a united Sri Lanka; the aspirations of the minority Tamils should be substantially.

Media sources reported that the rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), on November 2, escaped by hijacking a Russian vessel ‘ M.V. Utyos’ off Mullaituvu following a fierce confrontation that destroyed at least three of their craft. Following heavy losses the rebels boarded the Russian vessel and escaped as the Sri Lankan Navy did not have the capacity to attack the vessel. Later the vessel was recovered without any damage with 22 crewmen. Troops claimed that twenty rebels were killed in the attack.

The government's Special Information Centre (SMIC) said on November 3 that 62 rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were killed in two attacks by the Air Force and the Navy in Trincomalee and Mullaitivu areas during the past three days. In the attack on the Upparu and Kandalkadu rebel military complex 32 rebels were killed. Another 30 more were killed in the naval attack on the November 2 on rebel boats off Mullaitivu. Troops also claimed that an estimated 50 rebels were injured in the attacks.

While one rebel boat was destroyed, the other one managed to escape. This was the second major rebel attack on Trincomalee harbour after the October 23 suicide attack in which a naval craft was destroyed.
