Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna on July 3 remanded the former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara who were arrested over their failure to prevent the Easter Sunday terrorist bombings despite having prior knowledge of the attack, reports Colombo Page. Jayasundara and Fernando were arrested on July 2 while receiving treatment in hospitals on charges of criminal negligence and the failure to prevent or minimize the attacks that killed over 250 people including 47 foreigners.

Aththe Gnanasara called on Sri Lanka’s 10,000 Buddhist temples to help win votes for candidates from the Sinhala Buddhist majority. “We the clergies should aim to create a Sinhala Government. A Sri Lankan Court on July 9 rejected prosecution demands to prosecute Police Inspector General (IG) Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando to face murder charges for failing to prevent Easter Sunday Bombings, reports The Island. They were arrested the previous week on charges of negligence of duty. Another nine senior officers have also been named by the attorney general as suspects who should be prosecuted for security lapses over the attacks.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe informed parliament on July 10 that 161 suspects were in police custody while another 167 suspects were in remand custody in connection with the Easter Sunday attack, reports Daily Mirror. 99 persons had also been arrested on suspicion over the attack waiting to be produced in court on the advice of the Attorney General Dappula de Livera after completion of the investigations. Premier said 39 suspects were produced in court in relation to the incidents of Kuliyapitiya and Hettipola areas of North Western province where mobs attacked several mosques and torched dozens of Muslim-owned shops and homes.

Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Kapila Jayasekara on July 10 said that the Police had not received any information that Zahran Hashim was involved in terrorist activities other than some clashes with different Islamic sects in Kattankudy, Eastern Province reports that Daily Mirror. He said this while testifying before the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) appointed to probe the Easter Sunday attacks. Responding to a question raised by Committee Chairman Ananda Kumarasiri, the DIG revealed that he had not been informed by the IGP on a possible attack on April 21, whereas the IGP had informed several DIGs including the Western Province DIG and Traffic DIG. DIG considered this as a miscommunication rather than a failure of the intelligence services.

Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy said that two designated State Banks may provide relief to the tune of LKR 100 billion to hotels and other institutions affected by the Easter Sunday blasts, in the form of a one-year moratorium, to help in reviving the tourism industry, subject to Central Bank regulations, reports Island. "At present there have been 3,641 requests to banks for a moratorium. The amount considered for the moratorium is LKR 101 billion and so far 945 requests have been approved and 2,696 are under process of approval, the Governor said at the CBSL's monthly monetary policy review press briefing held at Central Bank auditorium on July 11.
