A senior professor, Shaharyar, of King Edward Medical University in Lahore District on February 1 received threats after he asked a student not to wear the 'hijab' (headscarf) in his classes, reported Indian Express. Shaharyar, the head of the Oncology Department had asked a girl attending a fourth-year MBBS class not to wear the hijab. "It's better if you wear the hijab outside the classroom," Shaharyar had said while delivering a lecture a few days ago. Following his remarks, students affiliated to the Islami Jama’at Tulba (IJT), the student wing of the Jama’at-e-Islami (JeI) boycotted Shaharyar's classes and protested against him. The IJT activists demanded that the Vice-Chancellor should take action against Shaharyar or else they would not allow him to enter the campus. Shaharyar said, "I have received threatening messages on my cell phone. I have done nothing wrong as I had just told the girl student that the hijab was unnecessary in class." Though Shaharyar apologized to the student concerned following pressure from extremist elements, the members of the IJT have not withdrawn their demand for "anti-Islam" elements to be thrown out of the campus

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the permission for the rallies held in Lahore and Multan by the Difa-e-Pakistan Council recently had been granted by the District Coordination Officers (DCOs) concerned. Since the DCOs fell under the administrative control of the Chief Minister, the Federal Government at best could seek an explanation from the Punjab Government, he added. The cabinet decided to formally take up the issue with the Provincial Government, ensuring that the Difa-e-Pakistan Council should stay away from individuals like Malik Ishaq in future.

He said District Police Officer (DPO) Rao Munir Zia had sent a letter on January 31 to District Coordination Officer (DCO) Tahir Khursheed suggesting the ban. Both departments, he said, agreed on the proposal and the DCO issued the orders under Section-5 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance 1960. Under the MPO, the Home Department can detain a person for up to three months if they suspect that the person could create a law and order situation.

The Lahore High Court on February 15 directed the Government to begin negotiations with US and Afghanistan Governments for the return of seven Pakistani detainees in Bagram, reports Daily Times. Hearing a petition challenging the alleged abduction of the seven Pakistanis, Justice Khalid Mehmood found there to be no serious allegations against the detainees. He said a Foreign Ministry’s report – submitted to the court earlier – showed that the Government had done nothing to ensure its citizens rights and freedoms as guaranteed by the constitution. The seven detainees are Awal Noor, Hamidullah Khan, Abdul Haleem Saifullah, Faizal Karim, Amal Khan, Yunus Rahmatullah and Iftikhaar Ahmad. The Justice Project Pakistan (JPP), a non-profit law firm, has moved the court for the release of the detainees. The court also observed that it is the government of Pakistan that should be fighting for the rights of its citizens considering that it is in a position to raise this issue at the highest Governmental level.
