At least 31 people were killed and 50 others wounded in a suspected suicide attack on a Muharram procession of Shia Muslims in the Hangu town of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on February 9. A series of explosions occurred through the procession in the main bazaar of Hangu town, some 200 kilometers northwest of Islamabad, between 9.30 am and 9.40 am local time. PTV reported that at least 23 people were killed and 50 injured in the three bomb explosions. Four people died when gunmen fired on a minibus in Saidan Banda near Hangu and four truck drivers were shot dead after a mob torched their vehicles in the nearby Ibrahimzai area, according to Dawn. In the ensuing riots, angry worshippers set ablaze shops and vehicles prompting authorities to impose curfew. NWFP Chief Minister Akram Durrani said a preliminary investigation showed the attack was a suicide bombing.

The death toll in the suicide attack on a Muharram procession at Hangu in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on February 10 is reported to have increased to 40, according to Daily Times. Troops were deployed in the town after angry Shias set ablaze shops and cars following the attack. Officials said that at least 90 people were wounded in the blast and the ensuing rioting. "From eyewitness accounts, it appears that it was a suicide attack," NWFP police chief Riffat Pasha said. Ghaniur Rahman, the Hangu District chief, told The News that the death toll could rise since some of the wounded were in critical condition and firing was still continuing in parts of Hangu town and its surrounding villages. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Army began firing artillery guns on February 10 at hilltop positions encircling the Hangu town from where rival villages were being attacked.

At least three more persons were killed in overnight sectarian clashes in the Hangu town of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) to raise the death toll to 43, according to The News. Eyewitnesses said the Pakistan Army deployed more troops in Hangu town and its surroundings to restore order. Fresh clashes occurred on February 10-night in some of the villages and neighbourhoods encircling Hangu town. A mortar shell hit a house in Balotang village, killing a nine-year old boy, Ishaq, and injuring his two brothers. Another person, Mubarik Shah, was killed in the Darwezo Palosa village. Separately, Akhtar Ali from Pas Killay village was also killed. There were also reports of burning of houses in Shahukhel village near Hangu town. Rockets were reportedly fired at Ibrahimzai village sited on the Hangu-Kohat road. Government officials and residents said heavy weapons, including mortars and rocket-launchers, were used in the fighting between Sunnis and Shias.

Security forces are reported to have recovered heavy arms, ammunition and explosives, most of them foreign made, from the Paya area near Dara Adam Khel in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on February 17. The Inter-Services Public Relations said in a press release that terrorists were planning to transport the weapons to North Waziristan. The seizure included some rocket launchers, 122 mortar bombs, 37 rockets, fuses and cartridges.

The accounts, sources said, were being operated through fake Pakistani identity cards. The agencies are looking to arrest the proprietor of the trading company Shirkat International, Abdul Bari, and his son Din Mohammad. The Federal Investigation Agency is also reportedly probing to find more accounts being operated by the firm and used to financing the Taliban.
