A suicide attack targeting Security Forces (SFs) on May 4 (today) killed at least 20 persons, including four Policemen, and injured over 42 others at Khar Bazaar in Khar town of Bajaur Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports The News. The target of the attack was Levies Force. According to sources, Levies Force personnel were conducting routine checking at Khar Bazaar when a suicide bomber blew himself that killed eight persons initially. Later the toll rose to 20. A senior official confirmed that it was a suicide attack and four Policemen were killed in the blast. However, The Express Tribune put the number of Levies personnel killed at seven. An official from the area told The Express Tribune that initial reports suggested that the target of the bomber was Subedar Major Javed and Subedar Fazl Rabi, who was also honoured with the Tamgha-e-Shujaat (Medal of Bravery) award.

In addition, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement emailed to The Express Tribune. TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan said that their targets were Levies officials Subedar Major Javed Khan and Subedar Quarter Master Fazl Rabi. Fazal Rabi, according to Ehsan, was honoured with a ‘presidential award’ (Tamgha-e-Shujaat or medal of bravery) for killing several TTP militants. “While (Subedar) Major Javed was involved in the killing of Shaikh Marwan,” he said. Shaikh Marwan was an Arab militant ‘commander’ who was killed by Levies personnel before the 2008 military operation in Bajaur Agency. The TTP ‘spokesperson’ Ehsanullah Ehsan further said that the group knew all those involved in ‘activity’ against the Taliban, and warned that such people “will be treated with iron hands”.

16 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, belonging to different tribes, including Masoodzai, Ali Sher, Afridi and Manttak (Orakzai), surrendered to the Government authorities in Kurram Agency, reports Daily Times. The militants gave up their weapons before the political administration in presence of the media in Parachinar, the headquarters of the region. “We have shunned all [militant] activities and ready to stand with our people and Law Enforcement Agencies,” a militant was quoted as saying. “We want to start our new life because we were compelled to cooperate with TTP militants when they started their activities in Kurram Agency. Now we have realised that they are killing our own people and not waging a jihad... rather it is bloodshed of the innocent people.” The former militants told the media that they had witnessed foreign fighters working side-by-side under four commanders, Abdullah, Muhammad Rasham, Walid and Rafiqullah. They disclosed that foreign militants, including Chechens and Uzbeks, had presence in the central parts of the troubled area.

39 persons were killed in two days of clashes between Security Forces (SFs) and militants in Miranshah area of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Dawn. Officials said 12 SF personnel, 10 civilians, including women and children, and 17 militants were killed. The officials said 72 persons were injured, adding that casualty figure could go up because some persons were still trapped under the debris of houses flattened by flying shells from explosions in arms and ammunition stores hit by helicopter gunships. Most of the militants were killed in an artillery attack on a compound. They were militants of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) comprising both Punjabi and Mehsud fighters.

Parliamentarians from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on May 8 have taken strong exception to a resolution adopted by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly asking for merger of FATA with the province, reports Dawn. Condemning the resolution, they said that only people of FATA had the right to decide about future of FATA. They criticised the Awami National Party (ANP) and said it had always betrayed the Pashtun. “The ANP government during their four-year rule in the province has done nothing which could be a source of pride for the Pakhtun nation. The ANP can no longer befool people of tribal areas. Only the people of Fata will decide about their future,” leader of the joint FATA parliamentary group Hamidullah Jan Afridi said in a statement.

The militants in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on May 8 distributed pamphlets pledging holy war to mark the first anniversary of the killing of slain al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, albeit a week late, reports Daily Times. The increasing strikes of anti-state elements and militants on SFs have compelled the Federal Government to launch a wide-ranging operation against foreign radical elements and fugitives present in North Waziristan Agency (NWA), Daily Times. Sources privy to the measure being taken confided to Daily Times that though the date and time for the operation had not yet been finalised, all other modalities and arrangements were in final stages. However, they claimed that next few weeks were very crucial in this regard as internal as well as external pressure on the Government was at its extreme and it had to move ahead in national interest. The sources further said as the authorities wanted to make the operation an ultimate attempt to push militants out of Pakistani territory, planners were taking their time to make the strike foolproof.

China has urged Pakistan to take effective measures to stop the activities of East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) militants present in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), The Express Tribune quoting BBC Urdu reported. According to the report, the Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi currently visiting Pakistan said that it was their belief that militants belonging to the ETIM are influencing the Chinese province Xinjiang, which has a Muslim majority population. Xinjiang, which is home to the Uighur Muslims, has faced increased terrorist activities in recent years, inviting a crackdown by Chinese forces. The restive province which shares a border with Pakistan has been under heavy security since July 2009, when the Uighurs launched attacks on Han people in the regional capital Urumqi. A local jirga persuaded the Taliban members to join peace-making efforts, Shah said.
