However, conflicting reports about the students recovered from the Taliban’s captivity and those still missing. Some sources said 43 students and five teachers were still missing and are believed to have been shifted to the distant mountains of the Taliban’s stronghold in Ladha in South Waziristan Agency. Senior military officials told The News that 80 people, 71 of them students and nine teachers, were recovered in a joint raid by the Pakistan Army and paramilitary Frontier Corps’s Shawal Rifles at Gharium area, 18 kilometers off Razmak. After their release, the students and teachers said their remaining colleagues had been shifted to South Waziristan by the Taliban via another route. The Taliban militants reportedly shifted the students and teachers before SFs could arrive and block the road and beef up security at roadside check-points.

Pakistan Air Force jet fighters bombed suspected hideouts of Tehreek-e-Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud at South Waziristan Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on June 13, according to Daily Times. “In response to the suicide attack on Jamia Naeemi, in which Dr Sarfraz Naeemi and six others were killed in Lahore, two terrorists’ compounds were targeted by the air force in Makeen,” a military statement said. However, the military statement gave no details of the casualties inflicted on the Taliban militants during the early morning strikes. “The number of casualties could not be ascertained.” Hours before the attack on Mehsud’s stronghold, President Asif Ali Zardari vowed in a televised address to wage war against militancy “to the end”.

Earlier on June 20, at least 22 suspected militants and six soldiers were reportedly killed in a daylong military action against the Baitullah Mehsud-led Taliban in South Waziristan as the troops cleared a portion of the Wana-Jandola Road, The News reported on June 21. Two fighter planes and a couple of gunship helicopters targeted the positions of the militants, who had occupied hilltops and blocked the Wana-Jandola Road between Tanai and Serwakai towns. Tribal sources told The News from Jandola that troops on June 19-night continued shelling the suspected militants’ positions with artillery guns. They were, however, unaware of the casualties suffered by the militants. Military officials said 32 militants were killed when two warplanes and gunship helicopters bombarded the militants occupying the road between Tanai and Serwakai. They claimed that the Tanai-Serwakai portion of the Wana-Jandola road had been cleared of the militants. The remaining militants affiliated with Baitullah Mehsud were reported to have fled their positions in the area. However, the militants denied any losses in the operation. Tribal sources said the advancing troops from Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, were facing tough resistance from the militants in efforts to clear the remaining 20-kilometre portion of the road between Serwakai and Jandola. According to the sources, the troops secured the area beyond Tanai to Old Serwakai, New Serwakai and Madejan. The troops had started movement from Wana and Shakai, two areas inhabited by the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe.

Later, when the militants and villagers offered funeral prayers of the deceased militants at the village graveyard, two more missiles were fired on the venue. Sources close to the militants told The News that majority of the people after attending funeral prayers of the slain militant commander Khwaz Ali had started leaving the venue and few were there to have a final glimpse of Ali when they came under a missile attack. They said two US drones fired two missiles on the gathering killing over 60 people, majority of them militants. There were reports that senior militant commanders, including Baitullah Mehsud himself, had arrived there to attend the funeral of Khwaz Ali. Some reports said the Taliban trainer of suicide bombers, Qari Hussain, and prominent Afghan Taliban commander Maulvi Sangeen were also killed in the missile attack. There was no prominent militant commander among the 80 people killed in missile strikes by a US drone on funeral prayers in South Waziristan on June 23. People who helped in shifting the injured to hospital in Miranshah in North Waziristan told The News that the dead included 40 low-level militants and 35 local villagers. They said majority of the people had left for their homes after attending the funeral prayers of the slain militant commander, Khwaz Wali Mehsud, and only relatives and close friends of the commander stayed there when the drone fired two missiles at them. Commander Khwaz Wali was a close associate of Baitullah Mehsud and had died in a drone attack on the same morning. Besides him, five other suspected militants were killed and seven others injured in the attack. Later, when the villagers and the militants gathered for funeral prayers of the commander, two drones reportedly fired two missiles on the gathering, killing over 60 people on the spot. Among the 35 villagers who died in the drone attack on the funeral, 10 were children aged five to 10 years and four local tribal elders. Sources at the Agency Headquarters Hospital in Miranshah said 58 people had been taken to the hospital, most of them in a critical condition.

22 soldiers were killed and 35 others injured in two separate attacks by militants in North and South Waziristan agencies on June 28, The News reported. In addition, 22 militants were also killed in the day-long military operations by Security Forces (SFs) in the region. 20 Pakistan Army soldiers, including a senior officer, were killed and 35 others sustained injuries when dozens of militants, affiliated with Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, ambushed a military convoy in the Madakhel area of North Waziristan Agency. Further, 12 militants and two soldiers were killed in the ongoing offensive in neighbouring South Waziristan Agency. Ahmadullah Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Taliban in North Waziristan claimed responsibility for the attack on the military convoy and warned to continue similar attacks on the SFs in the region till the US drone strikes were not stopped. Ahmadi phoned The News from Miranshah and claimed 60 soldiers were killed and 15 vehicles were destroyed in the ambush. The Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas confirmed the attack and said 12 soldiers were dead and 10 others wounded. Athar Abbas told The News that 10 terrorists were later killed when the Pakistan Army gunship choppers targeted positions of the terrorists where they had ambushed the military convoy. Official and tribal sources said the convoy was traveling from Madakhel to Wocha Bibi area near the border with Afghanistan when ambushed by the militants. The militants first attacked the military with an improvised explosive device (IED) and then started firing with heavy weapons. Sources said the militants used heavy weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, mortar shells and AK-47 assault rifles. After the attack, the militants reportedly took away weapons and other items from the slain soldiers. Gunship helicopters later targeted militant positions in the area. It was the second attack on military convoy by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led militants in North Waziristan in a week. In an earlier attack near Miranshah, four soldiers were killed and 20 others injured.

Previously known as pro-government militants, the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Taliban in the North Waziristan Agency (NWA) on June 29 formally scrapped the peace deal with the Government in, what they termed, protest against the US drone attacks. Ahmadullah Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led militants, called The News from Miranshah, headquarters of NWA, and said their Shura (executive council) members had decided in a meeting to scrap the peace accord. The Taliban in NWA had signed the first peace accord with the Government on September 5, 2006 after months of bloody clashes with the Security Forces (SFs) in which both the sides had suffered heavy casualties. However, later they scrapped the agreement when their relations with the Government turned sour. Again, with the help of a 40-member peace committee, comprising tribal elders and clerics, the Taliban signed another peace agreement with the Government on February 17, 2008, a day before the general elections. The latest accord was reportedly signed on militants’ terms and conditions. Before signing the agreement, the Government had removed all the roadside military checkpoints, released detained militants and compensated them and other tribesmen for their losses they had suffered during the military operation.
