Army fighter jets pounded militant hideouts in the Mamozai area of Orakzai Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) before dawn on February 1, killing at least 20 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, reports The Express Tribune. “At least 20 Taliban militants were killed in the bombing,” a military official in Peshawar said. Local intelligence officials confirmed the air strikes. The jets targeted at least four hideouts. The hideouts belonged to TTP ‘commanders’ Mulla Toofan and Maulvi Moinuddin, a security official said. Commander Maulvi Moinuddin and six foreigners were among the dead, adds Dawn.

Eighteen militants and seven soldiers were killed and three others injured during a clash that broke out when a group of 40 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants attacked on Security Forces (SFs) checkpost in Shidano Dand area of Kurram Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on February 3, reports Daily Times. TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan in a telephone call from an unidentified place claimed responsibility for the raid, saying 12 Frontier Corps soldiers were killed and four others captured by terrorists. “We carried out this attack to avenge the killing of our commander Taj Gul in Khyber Agency,” Ehsan said, without giving details when he was killed and his significance to the outfit. “We have killed 12 FC soldiers and captured four others alive,” he said, adding that terrorists also seized a large cache of weapons. Independent confirmation of death tolls is very difficult in the tribal area, a Taliban and al Qaeda stronghold barred to journalists and aid workers.

The Army on February 6 claimed to have made major progress in Operation Azmari Ghero launched in November 2011 in Kurram Agency of Federally Administered tribal Areas (FATA) after clearing the snow-covered Jogi Mountains and severing a vital supply route to militants in North Waziristan Agency, reported Dawn. “Jogi Mountains, which were being used by militants as their hideout, have been captured and the area is well defended,” an Army Officer said after Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani visited troops in Kurram Agency. This was one of the most intensely carried out recent operations in which 69 troops, including five officers, and about 160 militants, including foreigners, were killed. “The terrorists fought pitched battles because it was one of their important lairs and served as an important link between Tirah valley in Khyber Agency and North Waziristan,” the officer said, adding, that North Waziristan had now been cut off from three sides.

The number of Shaluber families displaced from Khyber Agency due to military operation against militants is expected to cross the 8,000 mark shortly putting relief agencies under pressure, reports Dawn. The relevant officials told the media that the influx of Shaluber displaced families had made the Jalozai camp’s administration to let the newly-registered Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) stay outside the premises if they wished. “A total of 6,179 Shaluber families have so far been registered at the Jalozai camp and around 2,000 more are expected to seek IDP status in the days to come,” said Adnan Khan, a spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). According to an official, PDMA had initially been asked by the Khyber Agency administration for making arrangements at the camp for 3,000 to 5,000 Shaluber families.

Security Forces (SFs) recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a raid on a Government school in Landikotal of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on February 9, reports Daily Times. Officials said that SFs raided a Government high school and the adjacent living quarters of teachers after they were informed by an arrested militant about presence of arms there. Different types of weapons, mortar shells, suicide jackets, mines and various types of explosives were recovered from some of the school rooms and teachers’ quarters. Later SFs neutralised at least three unexploded bombs at a safer place. SFs had arrested eight suspected militants, including the vice principal of the school, on February 2 from the same vicinity. Militants affiliated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in their telephonic conversation with some local journalists also expressed desperation over the arrest of their colleagues. They warned SFs and local political administration of dire consequence.

Members of the thousands of families belonging to four Khyber Agency tribes that earlier missed registrations are likely to get the internally displaced persons status, official sources said, reports Dawn. A decision to this effect, according to an official, had come after affected tribesmen from Khyber Agency took up the matter with the Federally Administered Tribal Areas’ authorities during the recent meetings between the two sides. “The political authorities have asked the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) for making arrangements to grant the IDP status to unregistered displaced families from Khyber Agency, extending them relief at the Jalozai camp,” a PDMA senior official said on condition of anonymity. The official said around 3,600 families were expected to be registered as IDPs by the authority. He said the decision would benefit the Khyber Agency families, which moved out of their villages for personal security concerns and missed to get registered as IDPs at the Jalozai camp. The official said the ongoing crackdown on Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) militants launched in 2009 had resulted in mass exodus with tribal people moving to Peshawar.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan on February 11 condemned attacks on Security Forces in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and said they would abide by the peace agreement with the Government, reports Dawn. A statement issued by the five-member Shura-e-Muraqba (Observation Council / Council for Protection) in Miranshah warned that some elements were trying to destabilize North Waziristan Agency by firing rockets and exploding remote-controlled bombs. “Everybody knows that through a secret and well-organised conspiracy, the peaceful law and order situation is being aggravated in North Waziristan,” says a one-page statement in Urdu issued by the Shura on its letter pad. Therefore, Mujahideen and Ansar (locals and outsiders) are directed to respect the peace agreement with the Government, it said.
