At least four people were killed during a shootout between tribesmen and security force (SF) personnel in the Asadkhel area of North Waziristan on August 3, according to Dawn. The exchange of fire followed a bomb explosion moments before the arrival in Asadkhel of a convoy of army and Frontier Corps (FC) which was on way from Bannu in the North West Frontier Province to Razmak. The remote controlled bomb explosion, however, caused no casualty. Three missiles were also fired at an FC checkpoint and the Miranshah Fort.

Nine persons were killed and 43 others injured when a suicide car bomber triggered an explosion at a busy bus stop near the entry point of Parachinar city in the Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on August 4, according to Daily Times. A 10-year-old girl was among those killed in the attack. Dr. Muhammad Hanif Jan of the Parachinar hospital told Daily Times that four people died instantly in the suicide car bombing while five others succumbed to their wounds in the hospital. He added that 43 injured people were being treated and the condition of some of them was critical. Eyewitnesses said that a car driven by a bearded man crashed into another car from behind at 10:30 am and as people gathered there was a big explosion. Kurram Agency Political Agent Sahibzada Anees confirmed that it was a suicide attack and said that security was already high in the city and it was not clear whether the bomber had a different target or he was simply interested in killing people. Security officials said that the political agent was to pass through the same entry point and it was not clear if he was the bomber’s target.

Talks between the Taliban and a tribal jirga (council) about the law and order situation in the Bajaur Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) failed on August 6, as the government refused to release arrested militants. "The four-day talks did not yield desired results as both sides stood by their stated positions," an unnamed local official and tribal elders from the jirga told Daily Times. Taliban leaders did not accept responsibility for attacks on government interests, and demanded release of arrested people, jirga member Malik Abdul Aziz told reporters in Khar after the talks failed. Bajaur Political Agent Shafeerullah told jirga members the government would not meet the Taliban demand for the release of people "involved in attacks on state interests and murder of security forces." The local administration had reportedly formed a 140-member tribal jirga to hold talks with Taliban leader Maulana Faqir Muhammad.

At least 15 people were reported to have died after army’s helicopter gun-ships attacked the Degan village in North Waziristan on August 9-evening following a roadside bomb blast which left four soldiers injured, according to Dawn. Army spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad informed that army helicopters chased the militants – who were carrying rocket launchers and small arms – as they fled after carrying out the bombing into a petrol station and later in their vehicles, according to The News. Helicopters reportedly bombed residential compounds and other infrastructure, destroying a petrol pump and five vehicles. While witnesses claimed that most of the people killed in the air strike were ordinary tribesmen, an unnamed official spokesman insisted that most of those killed were militants. The four soldiers were wounded when a bomb exploded near the Boya checkpoint on the Miranshah-Datakhel road. Residents said a military convoy was on way to Miranshah when one of the vehicles in the convoy struck a bomb near the checkpoint.

Meanwhile, about 16 personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps went missing on Jandola-Sara Rogha road in South Waziristan on August 9, The News reported. They are believed to have been abducted by militants. Reports indicated that Uzbek militants, who were evicted from Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, and its surrounding towns as a result of a tribal force led by ‘Commander’ Nazeer and his associates, had shifted to the Mehsud-dominated area and might be behind the abduction. However, army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Arshad said "Nobody has made any claim for their kidnapping."

Three music shops were damaged in low-intensity explosions at Landi Kotal in the Khyber Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on August 13-night, according to Dawn. Three other shops were also reportedly damaged. However, no loss of life or injuries was reported. The three explosions occurred inside the music shops in the Landi Kotal bazaar between 10:15pm and 11pm, said Rehan Khattak, the political administrator of Landi Kotal. He said four shop owners had been arrested because the explosives had been placed inside the shops. Officials said a letter was also found near one of the targeted shops which warned of further attacks against owners of music shop if they did not terminate their business. The letter was supposedly issued by a little-known religious organisation, "Amr Bil Maroof Wa Nahi Anil Munkir." However, music shop owners said they had not received any warning from any religious organisation or cleric.

Pro-Taliban militants beheaded one of 16 paramilitary soldiers abducted on August 9 in South Waziristan, and threatened to kill more unless 10 of their associates are freed, according to Daily Times. Residents found the body and severed head near a football ground in Jandola, 50 kilometres east of South Waziristan’s main town of Wana, on August 14, said Latifur Rehman, a senior government official. A note found near the body said others would meet a similar fate if the militants’ demands were not met. The militants, believed to be from the local Mehsud tribe, said they would swap the soldiers for their 10 detained colleagues, three of whom are held on charges of plotting bomb blasts and suicide attacks, AFP reported. Local Taliban militants have agreed to unconditionally release 15 paramilitary personnel who were abducted from Spinkai Raghzai in South Waziristan 10 days ago, a tribal negotiator claimed on August 19, according to Dawn. Member of National Assembly, Maulana Mirajuddin, chief of a 21-member jirga (council), said that the local Taliban had assured them that the 15 Frontier Corps (FC) personnel would be freed. He said the soldiers would be freed in phases and the first batch was likely to be handed over to the jirga in three days. The militants had kidnapped 16 FC personnel from the area dominated by the Mehsud tribe on August 9 and one them was later found dead. No group had claimed responsibility for the abduction. Mirajuddin informed that talks between the jirga and the militants had been successful and the jirga had been assured of FC personnel’s unconditional release. Officials said that the jirga had persuaded militants to vacate their positions on hilltops and subsequently the Wana-Tank Road was reopened.

Seven soldiers were killed and 18 others sustained injuries on August 24 in North Waziristan in four militant attacks, including two suicide bombings targeting the same Pakistan Army convoy at two different places, according to The News. One of the suicide bombers rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the military convoy near the Qamar Picket built on a roadside hill near the Mir Ali town, killing five soldiers and injuring 10 others. Cobra gunship helicopters reportedly attacked suspected militant hideouts later but reports about any loss of life were not available. The same convoy, which had come from Bannu in the North West Frontier Province and was on its way to Razmak, was attacked once more when it proceeded further. Another suicide bomber riding a vehicle struck the convoy near Asadkhel village on the road to Razmak, killing two soldiers and injuring two others. Villagers in Qutabkhel said gunship helicopters shelled the area after the attack on the military convoy. Military officials were later quoted as saying that two militants were killed by the troops in retaliatory firing. The third convoy to be attacked was reportedly transporting troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) from Qutabkhel to Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan. Three FC personnel were wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack that targeted the convoy.

Militants in South Waziristan are reported to have abducted around 150 Pakistan Army personnel and shifted them to their hideouts in the mountains on August 30, The News reported. They laid siege to two Pakistan Army convoys which were on their way from Wana and Shakai to Ladha subdivision. When the convoys reached Shawangi Narray, 40 kilometres north of Wana, South Waziristan’s regional headquarters, the militants accused them of violating the Sara Rogha peace accord, signed between the government and Taliban on February 9, 2005, under which, according to tribal militants, security forces were have to withdraw from the areas inhabited by the Mehsud tribesmen. Both the convoys comprised 16 vehicles in which around 150 soldiers were travelling. However, military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said "Sometimes soldiers cannot reach their destination in time due to either bad weather or other reasons… We hope they will return to their camp tomorrow morning, there is no suggestion of kidnapping or fighting."
