President of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) Nawabzada Talal Akbar Bugti during a press conference in Quetta on September 14 urged members of the United Nations (UN) Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) to meet all the stakeholders for getting information about missing persons, reports Dawn. “We will welcome if UN delegation meets JWP leaders and other people to get a clear picture about the Balochistan situation,” Nawabzada said. However, he said, that if UN officials go back without meeting stakeholders that would create a big question. Nawabzada Bugti termed the country’s situation critical and said the visit of the UN team indicated that the decision makers must take steps to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the country. He said there were reports that the visiting UN team would play the role of a ‘bridge’ between Government and missing persons and submit its report in 2013. The Government, he added, would get some time for taking steps to improve the situation in the country.

Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) Chairman Nasruallah Baloch while addressing a press conference at a token hunger strike camp set up by relatives of missing persons outside the Quetta Press Club on September 17 said he had submitted a letter in the Supreme Court Quetta Registry and lodged a complaint with International Human Rights Organisations (IHRO) that his life was in danger and that secret agencies should be held responsible if anything happened to him, reports Daily Times. He said, “The Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Aman (TNA) has threatened me that they will kill me and other members of my organisation. My organisation is not a political front”. He alleged that the Tehreek, which had threatened to kill him, VBMP Vice Chairman Qadir Baloch and other members of his organisation, was a proxy for Secret Agencies. “The organisation has already claimed that they are throwing away the bullet-riddled bodies of Baloch political activists,” the VBMP chairman said, adding that they were now threatening the women pursuing the cases of missing persons that they would also be targeted and killed.

Rejecting the allegations levelled by Balochistan National Party (BNP) chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal against the Government, Interior Minister Rehman Malik on September 30 said no army operation was being conducted in the province, reports Daily Times. Talking to the media, Malik said the Government was serious in resolving the missing persons’ issue in the province. He reiterated that foreign elements were involved in the unrest in the province and that he had sufficient evidence that could be presented before the BNP chief. He lamented that some people for their vested interests were talking about military operation in Balochistan, adding that it was a wrong approach. Terming the six points presented by the former Balochistan Chief Minister, Malik said these were complaints, not points. Vowing he would respond to all the allegations levelled against him by Mengal, he said politicians should not use the Balochistan issue for their political gains and all political parties should sit together to resolve the issues being faced by the country, instead of doing politics on sensitive issues.
