At least two passers-by, identified as Tanveer (14), a student, and Muhammad Khalid, a clerk at University of Balochistan, were killed and 16 others, four of them security personnel, were injured in a powerful remote-controlled explosion near Irrigation Colony on Saryab Road area in Quetta on May 1, reported Daily Times. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Sar Kalam Khan claimed responsibility for the attack. According to Quetta Capital City Police Officer Ehsan Mehboob, it was a remote-controlled blast and the target was a Frontier Corps (FC) convoy. Two passers-by were killed and 16 others injured. “Civilians suffered casualties and loss in the explosion, while vehicles of Security Forces were partially damaged,” he added.

A shutter-down strike was observed in major cities of Balochistan to condemn the ongoing security operation in Lyari, a Baloch-dominated area of Karachi. The strike call was given by the Baloch Republican Party (BRP) and supported by Baloch Student Organisations (BSO). BRP spokesman Sher Muhammad Bugti said, “The people of Lyari are trapped indoors for the past one week, running short of food, potable water and other essential needs of life.” He said it seemed that it had been decided to “punish” the Baloch in the country and deny them their basic rights.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Sikandar Tareen said explosives were planted underneath a donkey cart, while the target was a patrolling Police van. He said unidentified militants detonated the explosives when the patrolling vehicle of New Saryab Police Station passed by. Three passers-by, including, two onboard the donkey cart and rickshaw driver were killed, while nine others, including a Station House Officer (SHO), sustained injures, he said. In a press briefing after the conference, Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the hallmark of the meeting was Gen Kayani’s complete support for resolving the issues in Balochistan through political means, as military solution is not a viable and durable one to tackle the situation in the province. Police said they had seized 2,000 kilogrammes of explosives, 110 landmines, 2,980 detonators, 6,800 remote-control systems, 11 double-battery devices, 11 walky-talky sets and batteries, 3,000 metres of wire and 3,200 kilogrammes of potassium.
