Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) on March 4 staged protest demonstration against the killing of Ibrar Tanoli, a photographer of Reuters, and demanded of the Government to nominate a judge for heading the Judicial Commission to probe into the murder of more than 30 newsmen in the Province, reports Dawn. “Government must arrest the culprits involved in the murder of Wali Babar and Ibrar Tanoli,” BUJ President Irfan Saeed told protesting journalists outside Quetta Press Club. The newsmen complained that threats and intimidation to journalists in different parts of the province were undermining freedom of expression. “Government should nominate a judge to probe into the murder of newsmen without any haste,” Saeed demanded.

The Supreme Court directed the Balochistan Government on March 7 to submit a reply with explanation about prosecution and trial of arrested Frontier Corps (FC) officials in a civil or a military court, reports Dawn. The two-member bench comprising Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Athar Saeed resumed hearing of the case about law and order situation in the province and mass graves found in Khuzdar Disrict. During the course of proceedings, the court was informed that Shahid Hamid, the counsel for the Balochistan Government, could not appear because of illness. Additional Attorney General Shah Khawar informed the court that cases had been registered against FC officials and the army had formally contacted the Balochistan Government for their trial under the Army Act, but the provincial Government had not yet responded to the request. The Supreme Court ordered officials concerned of the court to include the list in the court’s record and directed Mr Nasarullah Baloch to contact the Balochistan High Court's Commission for the exact number of bodies found in mass graves in Khuzdar. The court also directed the home secretary of Balochistan to provide security to Mr Nasarullah Baloch.

According to an announcement by the Provincial Home Secretary Syed Asadur Rehman Gilani, the paramilitary force will continue to exercise police powers for two more months to maintain law and order in the province. Political parties of Balochistan on March 20 demanded of the Federal Government to include the name of the abducted Awami National Party (ANP) leader Arabab Zahir Kasi in exchange of prisoners' list with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), reports Dawn. They urged upon Islamabad to help the Provincial Government in an unhurt recovery of Kasi. “Arbab Zahir Kasi has been shifted to a region where Balochistan Government has no writ,” Nawab Sanaullah Zehri, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Provincial President said. He hinted that abductors might have shifted the ANP leader to Waziristan area bordering Afghanistan after kidnapping him from Quetta. “We have also formed a committee, which will seek TTP's help to release Arbab Kasi,” said Zehri. Kasi was abducted on October 23, 2013, from Patel Road area of Quetta. His family has received telephone calls of kidnappers demanding heavy ransom for his release.

A two-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC), comprising Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Mushir Alam, while hearing the cases on the law and order situation in Balochistan, missing persons and the Khuzdar mass grave case on March 26 observed that Balochistan Chief Secretary was visiting the United States (US) while people in the province were dying, reports The News. The Supreme Court gave these remarks after being informed that the meeting of the Balochistan Chief Secretary, the counsel for the Frontier Corps (FC) Irfan Qadir, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Balochistan Advocate General Nizamuddin could not be held as the Chief Secretary had proceeded on a visit to the US. The court asked the Balochistan Government to give a solution to the missing persons issue and directed the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report in this regard in the first week of April, 2014. The court directed the Balochistan Chief Secretary to hold a meeting on his return from the US and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.

An official in the province’s home and tribal affairs department told that eight armed militants stormed inside the Pasni radar post. The militants took eight SFs hostage. The assailants planted a bomb after the attack and damaged some technical equipments installed at the radar-post during the attack. They also fired few rocket-propelled grenades on the radar, partially damaging the installation.
