A top United Nations (UN) official was kidnapped and his driver was killed after his vehicle was ambushed in Quetta, capital of Balochistan, on February 2, Dawn reported. John Solecki, head of the UN High Commission for Refugees office in Quetta, was going to office from his nearby residence in the Chaman Housing Society when the gunmen in a car opened fire on his vehicle. Even as the driver was seriously wounded as their vehicle crashed into a wall, the gunmen abducted Solecki, who is an American national, at gunpoint. The UN official was reportedly without a police escort. The driver, Syed Hashim Hazara, later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Police said no group had claimed responsibility and there were no clues to the identity of the kidnappers. The Deputy Inspector General of Balochistan Police, Wazir Khan Nasir, said it was “too early to say who might be involved” in the abduction, but said authorities had extended adequate security to UN agencies in the area. Another Police official said: “We cannot rule out that Islamist militants were involved given their activities all over the country, especially in the northwest… But it is difficult to say which group may have been involved in the incident because there are many groups as well as the Taliban that are operating in the country.”

Kidnappers of an American working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Pakistan on February 13 released a video in which he pleaded for the United Nations (UN) to help secure his release, The News reported. John Solecki, head of the office of the UNHCR in Quetta, capital of Balochistan, was abducted on February 2, after gunmen ambushed his car and shot dead his driver. Solecki appeared blindfolded and said his message was to the UN. "I am not feeling well. I am sick. I am in trouble. Please help to resolve the problem soon so I can gain my release," he said. The video was delivered by mail to the office of a local news agency and seen by a Reuters reporter. The video, recorded in the memory card of a cellular phone, was accompanied a letter from the Baloch Liberation United Front in which they demanded the release within 72 hours of 141 ethnic Baloch women detained by the Pakistani authorities. According to Daily Times, the CIA is using the Shamsi airbase in Balochistan to launch the Predator drones that attack al Qaeda and Taliban targets in Pakistan, the London-based The Times has claimed. According to The Times, the CIA has been using the airfield - originally built by Arab sheikhs for falconry expeditions - for at least a year. In its investigation, the newspaper is reported to have focused on the unexplained delivery of 730,000 gallons of F34 aviation fuel to Shamsi in 2008. The Defence Energy Support Centre Website reportedly shows that a civilian company was contracted to deliver the fuel, worth $3.2 million, from Pakistan Refineries near Karachi. However, the CIA and Pentagon declined to comment on the issue. Major General Athar Abbas, the chief military spokesman of Pakistan, confirmed that US forces were using Shamsi. “The airfield is being used only for logistics,” he said.

The Baloch Liberation United Front (BLUF) has rejected a plea by the United Nations for direct negotiations for the release of John Solecki, the head of the UNHCR in Balochistan who was abducted two weeks ago. Mir Shahak Baloch, who claimed to be the spokesman for the previously unheard of BLUF, called reporters from an undisclosed location and said the UN official’s health had worsened in the last few days. He said the group had provided details of the missing persons to the Government along with a video of John Solecki released last week. “Instead of cooperating with us, the Government is trying to move the missing persons to more secretive places. We want the UN to formulate a team and come to Balochistan to see the actual situation about the missing persons,” the BLUF spokesman said.

The Inspector General of Frontier Corps (FC), Major General Salim Nawaz, has said terrorist activities are still being carried out in Balochistan despite Government efforts for reconciliation, Geo TV reported. Addressing a press conference in Quetta, he said the FC has foiled a major terrorist act in the province by seizing a heavy stock of weapons. These weapons were to be smuggled to different parts of the country from Afghanistan. He also said no operation is being carried out in any part of Balochistan for the recovery of UN official John Solecki because it is feared that his abductors might kill Solecki on seeing the troops approaching. The officer also claimed that Brahamdagh Bugti is reported to have links with the abduction of John Solecki.
