Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik, has said that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was a new face of al Qaeda, according to The News. "We have no doubt in our minds now that al Qaeda and the Tehrik-e-Taliban are one and the same thing. The nexus between the TTP and al Qaeda is there and their activities are continuing. We are left with no option except to strike against them in Bajaur. When we tried to establish one post they fired at and killed our people," Rehman Malik told representatives of foreign media at a special briefing arranged at the Interior Ministry in Islamabad on September 1-evening. He said the prime minister has given a three-pronged strategy to deal with the problem and dialogue and negotiations is one of them. However, he made it clear that the Government would enter into negotiations with only those who would abide by the law and not side with the lawbreakers. "To a great extent it is working," he claimed. He disclosed that Maulvi Namdar, the commander of a banned organisation, was killed while three groups, which were involved in militant activities in Bara, were banned. The TTP has also been banned, he told the foreign media. Malik said the Government has suspended operations against the militants and extremists but only for the holy month of Ramazan, mainly to facilitate the displaced people from these areas to go back to their homes. "But that does not mean that if somebody fires from that side we will not react. If there is one fire we will fire back nine times and we will make sure that it continues. If we noticed any training activity, any re-grouping, any firing at any police officer, Army personnel or a civilian, we will react," Malik warned. He said the Government has not signed any deal or entered into any agreement with these militants. "Not a single agreement is signed with anybody because we do not want to encourage these militants. There have been many requests, aired by these militants publicly (on electronic media) for ceasefire but we have not done it. We will continue (the operation) and ensure all possible steps to make Pakistan free of terrorism," he said.

Balochistan’s main militant groups - the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Baloch Republican Army (BRA) and Baloch Liberation Front - have decided to suspend their activities for an indefinite period, Dawn reported. The decision was announced by Beebargh Baloch and Sirbaz Baloch, spokesmen for the BLA and BRA, while talking to journalists on satellite phones on September 1-night. "All the three militant organisations have jointly decided to suspend their resistance movement for an indefinite period," they said. They denied that the decision was the result of any deal. "We want to tell the Baloch people and the world that we can stop the movement any time and can restart it whenever we decide to do so," they claimed. The spokesmen said that during the suspension of the movement the three groups would review the overall situation in the province and if the military operation and construction of cantonments were not stopped they would respond with full force. They warned that anyone found involved in spying against the Baloch movement would be finished.

Reuters added that Pakistani security forces missed a chance to catch al Qaeda second in command Ayman al-Zawahri, according to Malik. He did not say when the troops had missed the chance to catch Zawahri or give any more details about the incident. Malik told the press conference Zawahri was moving between Pakistan’s tribal areas and the eastern Afghan provinces of Kunar and Paktia. "We certainly had traced him at one place, but we missed the chance. So he’s moving in Mohmand and, of course, sometimes in Kunar, mostly in Kunar and Paktia," he said.

The army claimed on September 1 that it had routed Taliban militants in Bajaur, killing 560 Pakistani and foreign fighters and foiling a push to make Bajaur into a militant fortress. Major General Athar Abbas, the chief of ISPR, told a western news agency that 20 SF personnel had died and 30 were missing. "In our view, the back has been broken… Main leaders are on the run and the people of the area are now openly defying whatever the militants had achieved there," he said. He also said many foreigners were reportedly in Bajaur before the operation, but that many had probably fled to Afghanistan or other parts of the NWFP and that the operation had turned up no trace of al Qaeda leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri.

SFs also continued shelling the militants' hideouts, forcing the common populace of Sherakai, Bostikhel and other parts of the town to shift to safer places on the day one of the holy month of Ramazan.

Office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police in PTC confirmed that around 50 of their recruits were absent for the day, majority of whom were abducted from Bara sub-division in Khyber Agency. Officials revealed that recruits making it to PTC Hangu said militants disembarked at least 30 of their colleagues from one passenger vehicle while two to three each were offloaded from at least two other vehicles. Rihad Ali, a recruit who evaded capture by the kidnappers, said the vehicle he was traveling in was intercepted by some armed men in Bara and they were asked to step down. Afghan intelligence claimed on September 3 it had arrested a Pakistan national who said he was paid by his country’s intelligence agency to help abduct a Japanese aid worker who was later shot dead, according to Dawn. 31-year old Kazuya Ito was abducted on August 26 in the eastern Nangarhar province, about 50km from the Pakistan border. His body was found a day later. The arrested man was named as Adil Shah and had been studying at a madrassa (seminary) in the NWFP, the National Directorate for Security said in a statement from Kabul. He said he was enlisted by the ISI and had been working with three Afghans. "Adil Shah has confessed during the investigation that the abduction and killing of the Japanese engineer was planned and implemented by Pakistan’s ISI and for that a large amount of money was given to the members of the group," the statement said. The Taliban had claimed responsibility for kidnapping Ito, who had been working in Afghanistan for five years.

At least 20 people, most of them women and children, were killed in an assault by US-led coalition forces on a village near the Afghan border on September 3, Dawn reported. The attack comes amid an increase in the number of missile and predator attacks on suspected al Qaeda hideouts in Waziristan in recent days. It was, however, the first known ground assault of its kind. According to people in Musa Neka Ziarat in South Waziristan, three US helicopters landed in the plains at around 4am, troops disembarked from them and attacked a house, killing 10 people. They said that two children, three women and five men were killed in the attack on the house of one Payo Jan Torjikhel. A woman survived the indiscriminate shooting, they said. The troops then opened fire on villagers who had come out of their homes, killing another 10 people. The victims, including three children and two women, belonged to the families of Faiz Mohammad and Nazar Jan. Payo Jan and Nazar Jan were also killed. Local people said Payo Jan and the two other families had no association with militants. There were unconfirmed reports that the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops had also captured some people and taken them to Afghanistan.

In the province, militants in Darra Adamkhel barged into a branch of the United Bank Limited on September 3-afternoon and took away PKR two million from it after blowing the strong room, Dawn reported. Confirming the ransacking of banks in Darra Adamkhel, district coordination officer Siraj Ahmed told journalists that militants also broke into the Muslim Commercial Bank in Darra bazaar on September 2-night and took away PKR 2.3 million. He said that banks in Darra Adamkhel had shifted huge amounts to Kohat and Peshawar before the operation and retained only little cash for the convenience of the customers. However, the Taliban spokesman denied the allegation, saying that they had only occupied the buildings on the main road to retaliate a security forces’ attack.

The security forces (SFs) claimed to have killed about 30 militants and wounded 35 others in a ground assault backed by gunship helicopters in the militants-infested Koza Bandai area of Swat Valley in the NWFP on September 3, The News reported. There were also reports about five civilian casualties, including four women, besides injuries to scores of others. Two SF personnel were reportedly killed and four others sustained injuries. SFs launched a ground assault in Koza Bandai, the native village of the Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan, at dawn on September 3 to clear the area of the militants. A Mingora-based military spokesman, Major Nasir Ali, told The News that 25 to 30 militants were killed and 30 to 35 were injured in the attack that was backed by gunship helicopters. He claimed that the militants had been flushed out of the area but "some pockets of resistance were still there," which, he added, "would be mopped up in the next stage of the operation". Giving details, Major Ali said militants had established themselves in the village and made the civilian population hostage. The area, he added, was a stronghold of the miscreants, which served as a launching pad for their terrorist activities in and around the suburbs of Mingora, the district headquarters of Swat. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said the SFs had destroyed 200 houses in the operation at Koza Bandai.

Unidentified gunmen fired shots at Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s motorcade in a high security zone on the Islamabad Highway on September 3, Daily Times reported. Rawalpindi City Police Officer Rao Muhammad Iqbal said the motorcade was on its way to the airport to pick the prime minister. "The [prime minister’s] car was going towards the airport when it was fired upon from a small hill… Two bullets hit the driver’s window." "The prime minister and his staff were not in the car," Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said. A statement by the Prime Minister’s House said two of a number of sniper shots fired on the prime minister’s vehicle hit the window on the driver’s side. "However, because of the robust and comprehensive security measures, the prime minister and all the members of his motorcade remained unharmed," the statement said. Police said more than 20 suspects had been arrested and were being questioned. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Talking to Reuters, a TTP spokesman said Prime Minister Gilani was attacked because he was responsible for the ongoing offensives against militants in the northwest of Pakistan. "We will continue such attacks on Government officials and installations," said Muslim Khan, the Taliban spokesman in Swat.

A German man of Pakistani origin suspected of raising money and recruiting fighters for al Qaeda has been charged with membership in the terrorist group, federal prosecutors said in Berlin on September 4, Dawn reported. The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Aleem Nasir, was arrested in February 2008 at his home in the southwestern state of Rheinland-Palatinate and was charged on August 19. According to a statement from German prosecutors, Nasir traveled “regularly” to Pakistan and “by summer 2004 at the latest” he had agreed with al Qaeda leaders in the Pakistani-Afghan border region “to take part in al Qaeda activities.” His attorney, Manfred Gnjidic, said at the time of Nasir’s arrest that his client had not confessed to anything. But prosecutors said that between April 2005 and June 2007 he made at least four trips to Pakistan’s border region with Afghanistan, in one case handing over $21,732 to al Qaeda and on another at least 5,795.20 in cash. He is also alleged to have provided al Qaeda with additional equipment such as binoculars, night-vision goggles, laser range-finders, digital compasses and radios. “His duty is suspected to have been to acquire money and equipment in Germany for military use and recruit further members as well as fighters for the organisation,” prosecutors said in their statement.

Six people, including two suspected Arab nationals and four Dawar tribal militants, were killed and four others injured in yet another missile strike by a US Predator on Achar Khel village near Miranshah in North Waziristan on September 4. Official and tribal sources told The News that a US spy plane was seen flying over the area during the aerial attack on the village. The plane, which had been hovering over the border tribal villages for the past several days, fired a Hellfire missile that razed to the ground the house of local tribesman Farman Dawar at Achar Khel. Sources close to tribal militants, led by Maulana Hafiz Gul Bahadur, said that two among the dead were identified as Arab guests who had come to Farman’s house, while the remaining four persons killed in the air strike were local Dawar tribesmen. They said four people injured in the missile attack were also Dawar tribesmen.

Four children were among six civilians killed on September 5-morning in a suspected missile attack from an unmanned United States spy plane on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan, according to Daily Times. “Three missiles were fired from a drone that hit two houses. Four children, a woman and a man have been killed in the attack,” said intelligence officials. The attack occurred at Almakath village in the Gorveek area, 80 kilometers west of Miranshah. The two houses lie at ‘zero point’ on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. A tribesman in Miranshah said the village crisscrossed the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. “Half of the village is in Pakistan and the other half is in Afghanistan,” said Aqleem Khan. The army, however, denied that the strike had been carried out in Pakistan’s territory. “There was no strike on our side of the border. Pakistan stopped supplies to the United States and NATO forces in Afghanistan through its western Torkham border on September 5, citing security concerns. A senior official said the measure followed increasing Taliban threats to trucks carrying the supplies. “All Afghanistan-bound supplies for the International Security Assistance Force have been stopped as the [Torkham] highway is vulnerable,” Khyber Agency Political Agent Tariq Hayat told Daily Times, dismissing the impression that the decision is a reaction to continued United States attacks in Waziristan. “This decision has nothing to do with the situation in Waziristan or the US attacks. This is purely a security issue and we want no untoward incident to take place as far as supplies for ISAF are concerned.” A senior border official at Torkham, 58 kilometers west of Peshawar, said the closure of the highway would also affect the US forces, which get fuel, food and other military supplies through Torkham crossing points. The coalition forces also get supplies through the Chaman border in Balochistan, but the bulk of the supplies goes through Torkham – a shorter route for Kabul where the US and NATO forces are based.

The death toll in the suicide bombing in provincial capital Peshawar on September 6 has increased to 39, The News reported. Investigators have revealed that the double cabin pickup used in the attack was the personal car of the top militant commander in Darra Adamkhel that broke through a police cordon in Matani minutes before the blast. “The 22-year-old suicide bomber had packed explosives in the off-white double cabin pickup owned by the Darra Adamkhel-based top militant commander. The bomber was on his way to hit some important target in Peshawar city or cantonment but failed to make his way after Sub-Inspector Aurangzeb intercepted the car,” a senior investigator said. Militants operating in Darra Adamkhel have already claimed the blast. A spokesman for the militants, who identified himself as Mohammad, said the bombing was carried out to avenge the military operations against Taliban.

At least 25 worshippers were killed and 50 others injured in a grenade-and-gun attack inside a mosque in the Maskanai area of lower Dir in NWFP on September 10, according to Daily Times. Reports said that unidentified militants lobbed hand grenades in the Sunni mosque in Banai village – less than three kilometres from the Afghan border – during Taravih prayers and fired at the worshippers. "The attackers first lobbed grenades into the mosque and then opened fire with Kalashnikovs on the worshippers," Bahadur Khan, the village nazim, told Reuters. Local official Mahmood Khan told AFP three grenades were thrown into the mosque and hit the last two rows of the congregation and said the security official said the attack did not appear to be sectarian. "It is a blatant act of terrorism," he added. No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attack, but Khan said last month a meeting of elders in the area had issued a strongly worded statement against the Taliban and had vowed to act against them entering the area.

The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said the Pakistan military and government are focused on the instability in the border region and it is critical to continue to work with the new Pakistan government, Daily Times reported. "During this time of political turmoil in Pakistan, it is especially critical that we maintain a strong and positive relationship with the government, since any deterioration would be a setback for both Pakistan and Afghanistan," Gates told the House Armed Services Committee. Gates said that the insecurity and violence would persist in Afghanistan until the insurgency was deprived of havens in Pakistan, but suggested that the US wanted to avoid confrontation with Islamabad. Citing Washington’s plans for massive economic assistance to Pakistan he said that it would bolster the confidence of the new government in the US having a long-term commitment to the South Asian country. He also said that the US had a multi-year package for economic development in Pakistan.

Los Angeles Times quoting US military and intelligence officials reports the US is deploying Predator aircraft equipped with sophisticated new surveillance systems to counter terrorism in Pakistan. The report adds that the specially equipped drones were used amid a fundamental shift in US strategy in the area - unilateral American military operations - a gambit that could increase pressure on terrorists but risk alienating a country that has been a key counter-terrorism ally. In an indication of prioritising the Pakistan campaign, US officials said the specially equipped aircraft were being pulled from other theatres to augment aerial patrols above the Tribal areas.

He told Dawn News the terrorists had fled to the Shahkash area of the Khyber Agency and that a search operation involving security forces and the political administration had begun.

US military strikes at Taliban and al Qaeda targets inside Pakistan are risky but necessary and were long overdue, says a Washington Post editorial published on September 14, Dawn reports. "They must continue." The newspaper claimed that for more than six years, the Bush administration relied on Pakistan to combat the militants but it only strengthened the Taliban and al Qaeda networks in FATA. The policy, the Post said, also led to a steady increase in Taliban assaults on US and NATO forces in Afghanistan while US intelligence community believed that al Qaeda was using its bases to prepare for new attacks on Western targets, including the US. "By now it is clear that Pakistani army and security forces lack the capacity to defeat the extremists — and may even support some of the Taliban commanders," the paper claimed, adding, "Pakistan’s army has arranged truces with some of the extremists that don’t preclude them from fighting in Afghanistan."

The government functionaries themselves brought the explosives and showed to the world that they had been recovered from the possession of the Baloch tribesmen who do not even have access to clean drinking water and basic amenities of life," said the spokesman. "A contingent of 60 trucks and official vehicles came and began a door-to-door search operation," said an eyewitness. Daily Times reports that law enforcement agencies claimed late on September 15 to have detained three suspected terrorists and recovered 1,000 kilogrammes of explosives in a raid on a Baloch settlement in the outskirts of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. According to government sources, a joint raid was conducted in the New Kahan locality of Quetta, which is populated by the Marri Baloch tribesmen. During the raid, three suspected terrorists allegedly opened fire on the forces, which continued for an hour. The law enforcement agencies managed to overpower the three terrorists and took them into custody. The officials said they had also seized around 1,000 kg of explosives from a vehicle parked in the area. New Kahan is a settlement of the Marri tribesmen who had gone along with their tribal chief Nawab Khair Baksh Marri to Afghanistan in the 1980s. On their return from Afghanistan, they were provided shelter in New Kahan where they live amid scant civic amenities.

Swat-based Taliban on September 15 freed 25 security force (SF) personnel of the 38 they had earlier abducted as a ‘gesture of goodwill’. The release followed a Taliban executive council meeting chaired by rebel cleric Mullah Fazlullah at an undisclosed location in Swat, sources privy to the meeting told Daily Times. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told Daily Times by telephone the remaining 12 would be freed "in two or three days" after another meeting. "We have freed them in respect of the holy month of Ramazan, therefore, we did not [make any demands]," said the spokesman. He said the men had assured the Taliban they would not return to their jobs as soldiers after being released. As reported earlier, Taliban had captured 38 SF personnel during a siege of a post in the Dewlay area of Kabal Tehsil (administrative unit) on July 30. Two United States (US) military helicopters turned back to Afghanistan from the border early on September 15 after shots were fired from the ground, but there were conflicting accounts of the incident, according to Daily Times. Security officials and tribal elders said the threat of an incursion led Pakistani troops and tribesmen to fire. An unnamed senior administration official in Wana told Daily Times the US forces took off from the Macha Dad Kot base in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. "The US choppers came into Pakistan by just 100 to 150 meters at Angoor Adda. Even then our troops did not spare them, opened fire on them and they turned away," an unnamed security official told Reuters. Another security official told AFP that tribesmen joined in the firing after Pakistani soldiers played bugles to alert them. But Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesman, Major General Athar Abbas, denying there had been any such incident, said, "These reports are not correct. We have checked, there is an FC (Frontier Corps) post in the area. No helicopter came inside our side of the border, nor did our troops fire at any." Also, the US-led coalition, based in Bagram, said they were not aware of the incident, and added, "Our helicopters do fly close to the border conducting routine missions, but none have attempted to cross into Pakistan. We have no reports of such events." Further, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters, "I’ve checked into that and find it to be a spurious report. I’ve checked all the places that would know about something like that and it doesn’t appear to be accurate." Meanwhile, the Ahmedzai Wazir tribes have summoned a grand Jirga (council) to devise a strategy against possible US incursions, a tribal elder told Daily Times. Foreign attacks on Pakistan’s Tribal Areas are an incursion and all-out efforts would be made to stop such invasions, said Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar. The minister said that Pakistan would take every possible measure to defend its territory. Also, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said that Pakistan is trying to solve the issue of American attacks inside its Tribal Areas diplomatically

Ten Taliban militants were killed and several others injured on September 16 when Pakistan Army helicopter gunship and fighter jets fired shells at militant hideouts in Bajaur Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Daily Times. It said the FC personnel had seized various types of ammunition and large amounts of Afghan currency notes during a search of militant compounds around Tang Khata. Military spokesman Major Murad Khan said ground troops were searching house-to-house for Taliban. "They have constructed underground bunkers and are putting up stiff resistance. Troops are clearing each and every house in the area," adding, he had no information about casualties in the current fighting, but the military has said that 117 people have been killed in Bajaur over the past week. A United States missile strike on a compound used by militants in South Waziristan in FATA killed at least six people and wounded three others on September 17-evening, officials said, according to Daily Times. Two intelligence officials told Associated Press that missiles hit the compound used by Taliban and militant organisation Hizb-e-Islami. Also, a security official told AFP that dead included some foreigners whose nationalities were not immediately known. Another senior official told Reuters that the strike was the result of US and Pakistani intelligence sharing, adding a container of arms and ammunition was also destroyed. "It shows improving intelligence co-ordination on the ground," said the official. "Two missiles directly hit the compound while the other two fell in the surrounding area. There are a few militant training camps in the area and no civilian population around the site of the strike," AFP quoted another official as saying. He said the Baghar Cheena area, where the strike took place, was the stronghold of local Taliban commander Maulvi Nazeer. But it was not immediately clear whether he was in the area at the time of the strike. The attack came hours after US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen told Pakistani leaders that America respects Pakistan’s sovereignty, amid a mounting tension over cross-border strikes by the US.

A bomb exploded at a madrassa (seminary) run by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam in Quetta, provincial capital of Balochistan, on September 19, killing five people and injuring 10 more, Daily Times reports. Television footage showed a gaping whole in the external wall around the seminary and one partly demolished adjacent room. “The madrassa people say that someone threw explosives into the madrassa, but we are investigating,” police official Wazir Khan Nasir told Reuters. But police officer Raja Ishtiaq told Associated Process the blast occurred inside the room and that police were investigating how the bomb got there. The walls had fallen outwards, another police official said, suggesting there could be some explosives inside the room. “We are looking into all possibilities including whether they were preparing some explosives.” An eye witness who identified himself as Shahbaz Ahmad said students had been scuffling with a man who tried to push past them after they asked him why he wanted to enter the compound, adding, “When they barred his way, he blew himself up.”

Two Chinese engineers abducted by the Taliban appealed for their safe release on September 22, according to Daily Times. In a newly released video by the AfPax Insider news service, the two apparently distraught Chinese engineers appealed to the governments of China and Pakistan to help save their lives. Wearing traditional shalwar qameez and sitting in chairs with their backs towards a whitewashed mud wall, the sobbing men made repeated calls for help. The two-minute video had been recorded inside a room and no other person was visible except the two Chinese. Muffled voices of a girl and a woman could also be heard in the background, denoting that the two hostages were being kept in a house somewhere. The two Chinese had no visible injuries. As reported earlier, the two Chinese telecommunication engineers were abducted on August 29 from the Khaal area of Dir district where they were repairing a telecommunication tower. Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and said the Taliban would continue targeting government installations and kidnapping people unless the government halted military operations in Swat.

Highly placed sources said that foreign al Qaeda and Taliban fighters are ‘infiltrating’ into Bajaur from Afghanistan to join their colleagues in the crucial battle for survival in the face of an all-out military action. "Foreign militants are leading the fight against the army. The army action is beyond the local combatants’ capacity and they need hardened and well-trained foreign militants," said the sources. The foreign Taliban and al Qaeda – Arabs, Chechens, Uzbeks and Afghans – are being led by an Afghan commander, Qari Ziaur Rehman. "He (Rehman) is leading the fight and he is calling for reinforcement from across the Afghan border," said the sources, adding, "He is leading the whole show. He carries a lot of clout among foreign militants who mostly engage the Americans inside Afghanistan."

Police are searching for two explosives-laden trucks in the federal capital, Islamabad, Daily Times reports on September 23. Sources said intelligence agencies had informed the police that three trucks loaded with explosives had entered the federal capital. One of them targeted the Marriott Hotel on September 20, while whereabouts of the other two are not known. The sources said the ‘missing’ trucks were still present in the city, adding that a risk of strikes by them had forced the police to put the security on high alert, increase personnel deployment near important buildings, erect pickets on key roads and begin intensive patrolling across Islamabad. Vehicles, especially trucks, were being searched by the police at the pickets, the sources said, adding the police were keeping a close watch on hotels and guesthouses.

Pakistani troops fired on United States helicopters which had crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan on September 25. "Today (Thursday) at 3:30pm, two helicopters from Afghanistan side crossed into Pakistan territory in the area of Saidgai in the Ghulam Khan sector of North Waziristan Agency," a spokesman of the ISPR told Daily Times. He said when the helicopters passed over Pakistani border post and were well within Pakistani territory the troops fired warning shots, adding, "On this, the helicopters returned fire and flew back." There were no casualties nor were the helicopters damaged, the NATO said. The Pentagon, however, denied the helicopters had crossed the border. A US military spokeswoman said two OH-58 helicopters had been flying a routine operation and were about 11.5 km on the Afghan side of the border in Khost province when they were fired upon, adding, "They received small arms fire from a Pakistani military checkpoint. The helicopters didn’t cross into Pakistani airspace." Neither the helicopters nor ground forces returned fire, she said. But an unnamed American official told AP that US and Pakistani troops traded gunfire during a five-minute skirmish after the incident. The official says American forces "responded with small-arms fire directed at the outpost, and that the Pakistani forces returned fire against the ground units".

The situation in Bajaur Agency will be stabilised within two months, the Frontier Corps (FC) chief in the region said on September 26, according to Daily Times. "My timeframe for Bajaur is anything from between one-and-a-half to two months to bring about stability," FC Inspector General Maj Gen Tariq Khan told reporters. He informed that the troops had killed more than 1,000 Taliban and injured 2,000 others since the offensive began in early August and that five top al Qaeda and Taliban commanders were among those killed in the month-long operation. He said they included four foreigners. They were Egyptian Abu Saeed Al-Masri, Arab Abu Suleiman, Uzbek Mullah Mansoor, and an Afghan commander called Manaras. The fifth was a son of Faqir Mohammad, the top Taliban commander in the region. Faqir himself was believed to be injured. Some 63 troops had died and 212 were injured in the operation so far, Khan further said. Khan estimated 65 percent of the Taliban problem would be eliminated if they were defeated in Bajaur, describing the region as a ‘centre of gravity’ for the Taliban. "If they lose here, they’ve lost almost everything," he said. Khan also showed reporters photos of tunnel systems and trenches, suggesting the Taliban were well established in the region that is considered a likely hiding place for top al Qaeda leaders including Osama Bin Laden. He put the Taliban’s strength at around 2,000, including Afghans, Uzbeks and Arabs as well as Pakistani Taliban. He said the Taliban’s fighting strength had not gone down appreciably despite heavy casualties due to reinforcements coming in from the northwest as well as Afghanistan. "I personally feel that trained squads have been moved in," Khan said.

The helicopter gunships destroyed explosive-laden vehicles of Taliban militants at a basic health unit. The local administration said the Taliban subsequently blew up two security checkposts and a bride in retaliation to the vehicle attack on September 29. The report added that the latest clash broke out in Mulla Saib Dara village, when a 6,000-strong tribal lashkar tried to set ablaze houses and hideouts of Taliban militants. "Fighting is going on and to help us, the army sent some gunships which fired at the Taliban, killing several of them," tribal elder Malik Younus told Reuters. He said his men would battle the Taliban until they were cleared from the region. "It’s now clear to everybody that we can’t tolerate lawlessness in our land. Everyone has to obey our tribal rules and they can’t make our land a hub of terrorism," Younus added.
