Sindh Government on April 3, invoked the maintenance of public order to keep in jail British-born alQaeda leader Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh after a court overturned his death sentence in the abduction and murder of United States (US) journalist Daniel Pearl in Karachi in 2002, reports The Times of India. Three of his accomplices, who were acquitted on April 2, will also remain in prison. Sheikh was sentenced to death in 2002 for masterminding Pearl’s murder. The other three were sentenced to life. On April 2, a two-judge Sindh High Court bench had found Sheikh guilty of the lesser charge of kidnapping and commuted his death sentence to seven years in prison. According to the law, Sheikh was eligible to walk free as he had already served 18 years in prison on the death row. The Sindh Government acted swiftly to invoke the order which allows it to keep the four convicts behind bars for three months. According to a notification issued by the Sindh Home Ministry, the release of Sheikh and his three associates could jeopardise the law and order situation in the province, thus, necessitating their continued detention.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) will review Pakistan's performance to meet international commitments in the fight against terror financing during a meeting scheduled to be held in China in June 2020, reports The Times of India on April 7.Currently placed on the FATF's 'grey list', Pakistan has been scrambling in recent months to avoid being added to a list of countries deemed non-compliant with anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regulations, a measure that officials in Islamabad fear could hurt its economy, which is already under severe strain. FAFT will review Pakistan's performance to meet international commitments and standards in the fight against money laundering and terror financing at its meeting slated to be held in Beijing (China) on June 21-26, 2020, Dawn reported. However, it is not yet clear if the meeting could be postponed due to the global coronavirus pandemic which broke out in central China's Wuhan city.

Pakistan has removed around 1,800 terrorists from its watch list, including that of the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ‘operations commander’ Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, ahead of a new round of assessments by the Financial ActionTask Force (FATF),according to Castellum.AI, a New York based regulatory technology company, reports Times of India. The so-called proscribed persons list, which is maintained by Pakistan's National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA), is intended in part to help financial institutions avoid doing business with or processing transactions of suspected terrorists. The list in 2018 contained about 7,600 names. It has been reduced to under 3,800 in the past 18 months, according to Castellum.AI. About 1,800 of the names have been removed since the beginning of March. It is possible that these removals are part of Pakistan's action plan to implement the FATF recommendations, Castellum.AI said.

Islamabad has told a visiting team of a United Nations Security Council (UNSC)monitoring committee that it had been unable to act against numerous individuals listed in its sanctions list because the UN panel had given “insufficient information”, Hindustan Times reported on May 1.The UN analytical support and sanctions monitoring team, which was on a five-day visit to Pakistan in March, was told that the UN Sanctions List did not have the accurate date of birth, nationality, national ID number, passport number or a specific address of the men sanctioned for their terror links. Pakistan authorities acknowledge the presence of only 19 terrorists who figure in the UNSC 1267 Sanctions List. For the rest, they have told the UNSC that they cannot locate them due to insufficient information. The UNSC 1267 Sanctions List has 130 names from Pakistan.Islamabad, however, acknowledges the presence of only 19 of them including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder and chief Hafiz Saeed. It has already moved the UNSC to delist six terrorists including Matiur Rehman, described in UN records of 2013 as the chief operational commander of terror group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).
