According to media reports, Kathmandu-based European diplomats from Germany, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the European Union (EU) visited refugee camps in Jhapa and Morang on July 3 reportedly because of a lack of progress in the repatriation of refugees. The diplomats discussed with the refugees about their plight. Media reports added that the refugees asked the diplomats to speed up the repatriation process. The refuges in the camps in Nepal are people of Nepalese origin who claim they are Bhutanese citizens, but had been forcibly evicted from Bhutan by the Royal Government. A verification process to ascertain who are true citizens has jointly been undertaken by the governments of Nepal and Bhutan so as to enable genuine citizens to return to Bhutan.
