According to media reports from Nepal, member countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) have agreed to amend their respective national legislation to synchronize them with international laws against terrorism. The decision was taken on August 20 by Foreign Secretaries of SAARC countries ahead of the meeting of SAARC Foreign Ministers, scheduled for today, August 21, to discuss the threats to regional stability and the measures to be initiated to enhance economic cooperation. Reports said the Foreign Secretaries agreed in principle during their two-day deliberations in Kathmandu that each member needed to enact laws to implement the SAARC Convention against Terrorism. The SAARC Secretariat will make a compendium of all enabling laws. Speaking to the media, the Indian Foreign Secretary said, "This is important in terms of creating necessary institutional framework under which the countries can actually cooperate and make extradition easy". The Foreign Ministers will take a final view on this and other issues confronting the region during their two-day meeting beginning here on August 21.

Media reports from Nepal, quoting Agence France Presse, said, on August 26, sections among the Belgian society have expressed serious reservations on the proposed sale of weapons to the Nepalese government. Reportedly, arms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale (FN), headquartered near Liege, Walloon area, has bagged the order for 5,500 machine guns. Reports said the debate in Belgium is, whether it would be justified on humanitarian grounds to supply weapons to a country where there is an armed conflict involving civilians. Government troops in Nepal are presently battling with left-wing extremists, the Maoist insurgents, who have launched what they call ‘people’s war’ in 1996. Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel reportedly has justified the sale and said, "The sale of arms, the production of arms is not immoral".
