Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres on January 7 stabbed a 47-year-old civilian, Suresh Erra Alam, to death in Nandigaon village in Aheri tehsil (revenue unit) of Gadchiroli District of Maharastra, reports Indian Express. “Suresh Erra Alam was picked up by Naxals from his house in the night and was taken to a place near the village, where he was stabbed in the chest with a sharp weapon,” Additional Superintendent of Police Sudhir Hiremath said. IBN Live reports that a group of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres opened fire on a Police team in Gadchiroli District on January 11, Police said. The team, consisting of personnel from C-60, a special anti-Naxal unit, came under fire while patrolling near Kosni village in Etepalli taluka (administrative division), they said. The police promptly returned the fire and the encounter lasted for 15 to 20 minutes, but there was no report of any casualty on either side, they said. An alleged Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed during an encounter with the Police in Bezarpalli area in Sironcha taluka (administrative unit) of Gadchiroli District on January 12, reports IBN Live. The shoot-out between a group of Maoists and a Police platoon lasted about 45 minutes before the Maoists fled, said the Police. A body of a Maoist was recovered from the site. The Security Forces have claimed that the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre shot dead on January 12 in an encounter near Beijurpalli in Gadchiroli District was Mangru Michcha, alias Linga (22), ‘sectional commander’ of Platoon 14, reports The Times of India. The slain Maoist allegedly led the military wing in the Aheri-Sironcha division of the CPI-Maoist. Miccha was earlier with Bhamragarh local guerrilla squad and worked for platoon 7. Stepping up the deployment of Security Forces (SFs) in the Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)]-belt, the Union Ministry for Home Affairs (MHA) has given its nod for additional deployment of 7,000 personnel in the inter-State border areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Maharashtra, reports Deccan Chronicle. The additional personnel will be deployed from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF). Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) struck a blow to the Zilla Parishad polls in Gadchiroli by killing the Bhamragarh Panchayat Samiti Chairman and Bhamragarh tehsil (revenue unit) Congress Unit Chief Bahadurshah Alam on January 28, reported Indian Express. Three members of Maoists’ Quick Action Team came to a tea stall in the town square where Alam was having his morning tea and shot him dead from close range, said the Police. They ran away shouting, “Alam Murdabad, Lal Salaam Zindabad”. “He was reportedly warned by the Naxals not to contest. The Central Government on January 30 admitted that execution of road projects in Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)]-hit States has been delayed and only 730 kilometres of the proposed 5,477 kilometres highways network could be completed so far, reports IBN Live. "So far, work in 730 kilometres length has been completed. There has been poor response from contractors for works in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Odisha," an official statement by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry said. The Government had approved a programme for development of 5,477 kilometres roads in 34 LWE affected District in eight States at an estimated cost of INR 73 billion, the statement said. The completion period of the projects vary from one to three years. However, it added that it has relaxed the eligibility criteria for the contractors to encourage larger participation and at present work is underway on 140 projects entailing an investment of INR 44.28 billion in affected States.
