In the search operation that began on January 26 to rescue four abducted persons, one Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF) trooper died and 11 others suffered injuries when suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres triggered over 12 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) explosions on January 27 afternoon in Pirtand block of Giridih District, reports The Hindu. The abducted persons were released on January 27 evening. Three Panchayat-level workers and a Prime Minister Rural Development Fellow (PMRDF) were earlier taken hostage by Maoists on January 25 in Giridih District. Eleven companies, or nearly 700 paramilitary personnel, of CRPF and special assault groups of Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) were deployed in the search operations. “Though we lost one of our men, we were able to secure the safe release of all four by putting the Maoists under immense pressure. Our forces surrounded them from all sides,” said Jharkhand Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar.

In the wake of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) posters appearing every now and then on heavy vehicles that ferry Uranium ore from Bagjata mines to Jadugora processing unit, in Seraikela-Kharsawan District, the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) has expressed apprehensions over excavation work, reports The Times of India on January 28. The company has said if posters with warnings continue to appear on the trucks for long the uranium excavation work shall be hampered. For the last several weeks, posters instructing transporters to stop ferrying uranium ore from the Bagjata mines have been appearing on the trucks at regular intervals. "We are experiencing a modest slowdown in transportation work owing to Maoist threats and probably the enrichment work will suffer in the long run if they (rebels) continue doing the same in the future," said Chairman and Managing Director of UCIL, Diwakar Acharya. The Maoists had been demanding permanent jobs for the locals in the company as compensation against land acquisition in Bagjata is already mired in controversy.
