A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Dasru Punem, carrying a cash reward of INR 800,000 on his head was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forest between Hurrepal and Bechapal hills under Mirtur Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on June 2, reports New Indian Express. According to Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallav, “A joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force was out on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. After a brief gun-battle, the Maoist fled from the spot. Later, we recovered a body of a Maoist in a ‘uniform’ who was identified as Punem”. The SP further said that Punem was working as ‘section commander’ of Military Company Number-2 of CPI-Maoist. He was involved in about 14 cases of Maoist violence in Bijapur, Dantewada and Sukma District. “He was also involved in Dharbha valley attack in which 28 people including Congress leaders were killed,” the SP added.

Four suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)courier-cum-sympathisers were arrested in separate incidents in Chhattisgarh and huge caches of arms and ammunition were recovered, reports The Pioneer on June 7. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P., Manoj Sharma, and Harishankar Gedam were arrested from Sukma District on June 2, while Ganesh Kunjam and Atmaram Nareti were arrested from Kanker District on June 6. “They were involved in supplying ammunition to the rebels in the Bastar region. Sharma, of Dhamtari, and Gedam of Balod District were intercepted at Malkangiri Chowk in Sukma town and 395 bullets of self-loading and .303 rifles were seized,”the IGP said adding that during interrogation, they said Kunjam and Nareti, linked to Maoist leader - Darshan Pedda who is ‘secretary’ of the 'Pratappur area committee' in Kanker District, had approached them to supply ammunition.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exploded an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and cut a highway connecting Aranpur to Potali village in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh at 16 places on June 2, reports Amar Ujala. As per the report, more than 150 Maoists reached Patali village to chop the highway and also severely damaged it with an IED blast. The report further adds that INR 60 million has been spent on the development of the said highway. A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) official said the Maoists wish to preserve their base in the area. The highway damage displays the rising frustration among them.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couple identified as - Gopi Modiyam (35) and his wife Bharti Kattam (32) carrying a cumulative cash reward of INR 700,000on their heads surrendered before Security Forces (SFs) in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on June 6, reports The Times of India. As per the report, both were involved in over 73 cases. While Gopi was carrying a cash reward of INR 500,000on his head, Bharti was carrying INR 200,000 on her head. Following their surrender, the secretary of Gangaloor area committee of CPI-Maoist has issued a note of threat against Gopi warning him of punishment at their ‘Jan Adalat’ (People's/Kangaroo Court organized by the Maoists). According to Bastar range Inspector General of Police (IGP)P. Sundarraj, Gopi was an active member of Gangaloor area committee was involved in Maoist attacks including that of a deadly Murkinar camp that killed 11 security personnel and in Pamalwaya that killed 11 Policemen, in 2006. Gopi was also involved in snatching of weapons and attacking at Police line training centre in Koraput District in Odisha in 2004. He was part of 17 major attacks on SFs since he joined Maoist ranks in 2002.His wife Bharti was active in military platoon number 2 and was involved in many Maoist incidents against Police and SFs.They were involved in several criminal incidents against Police, executed murders, and loot, targeted security personnel on many occasions.

Two Police personnel identified as– Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anand Jatav and Head Constable Subhash Singh, were arrested for their alleged involvement in supplying arms and ammunition to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on June 8, reports Outlook India. According to the Bastar range Inspector General of Police (IGP) P. Sundarraj, the matter came to light when four persons identified as, Harishankar Gedam of Balod District and Manoj Sharma of Dhamtari District and Ganesh Kunjam and Aatmaram Nareti were arrested from Sukma and Kanker Districts on June 2 and June 6 respectively. It was during investigation and interrogation, they opened up to other links of the urban network of Maoist that led to arrests of the personnel. Police had recovered 695 bullets of .303, AK-47, SLR, and INSAS rifles from their possession.

Five Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including a woman, surrendered before Security Forces (SFs) in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on June 11, reports The Week. Disclosing the identity of the Maoists, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P. said, of the five Maoists, Midiam Bandi alias Naresh, who was active as ‘area commander-in-chief’ of the Kerlapal area committee of Maoists, and Madvi Budhri alias Kamli - a woman Maoist and a ‘commander’ of Kistaram Local Guerilla Squad (LGS), were carrying cash rewards of INR 500,000 each on their heads. Similarly, another surrendered Maoist, Kartam Pojja, was a member of Maoists’ military platoon number 4 and carried a reward of INR 200,000 lakh on his head. They were involved in various Maoist attacks, including the Burkapal attack in Sukma District on April 24, 2017, in which 26 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed, the IGP said adding that two other Maoists were identified as, Podiyam Ganga, a member of Maoists' public relation wing, and Madkam Hidma, a ‘militia member’.

Two persons including a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader were arrested on charges of alleged links with the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on June 13, reports Hindustan Times. According to the Police, the vice-president of BJP in Dantewada District, Jagat Pujari along with one Ramesh Usendi was supplying goods and other items to the Maoists of Abujmadh forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallav said, both were arrested after they procured a tractor to allegedly deliver it to a hardcore Maoist. “Jagat Pujari is a resident of Barsoor and is vice-president of the District unit of BJP. Ramesh Usendi was also arrested and the Police have booked them under sections of the Chhattisgarh Jan Surakhsha Adhiniyam. More sections could be added during the course of the investigation”, the SP added.

In the first incident, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Force arrested a Maoist identified as Karam Ganpat (38), from a forest between Futapalli and Nadpalli villages under Usoor Police Station limits. In the second incident, a joint team of the DRG and local Police arrested two Maoists identified as - Kosa Ram (24) and Poyam Somaru (27) from a forest near Chuchkonta village under Farsegarh Police Station limits. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, P. Sundarraj said, "Based on information received, a team of District Reserve Guards (DRG) went to Peddakwali village and arrested Sumitra who was resting at her home. She will undergo the COVID-19 test and thorough health check-up will be done, till then she has been quarantined. As Sumitra has a history of suffering from tuberculosis earlier, the ‘senior commanders’ felt it was not safe for others if she continued to suffer from cold, cough, and fever. Hence, they suspended her." Sumitra was active for the past 10 years in the region and was currently posted as a member of platoon number 3 of company number 1 of CPI-Maoist, the IGP added.

P said, on receiving specific inputs about the presence of Maoists in Ghattekal-Dengalputti-Paiveyar forests in Abhujmad, the SFs launched a search operation on June 21, and came upon the transit camp. While the SFs were encircling the area, Maoists sensed their presence and escaped, leaving behind the explosives and materials of daily use, the IGP added.

According to the US State Department report, Trafficking in Persons Report 2019, released by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on June 25, the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh continued to recruit and use children as young as 14 years in direct hostilities against the Indian Government, reports Hindustan Times. The report observed that Maoists were forcibly recruiting children to handle weapons and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and in some cases be human shields. Also, several women and girls formerly associated with Maoist groups reported that sexual violence, including practices indicative of sexual slavery, was a practice in some Maoist camps, the report observed. Moreover, non-state Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] groups continued to systematically recruit and use child soldiers, it further added. Earlier in 2017, the United Nations (UN), in its annual report, had said that it had received information that children were being recruited by Naxals in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

Around 10,000 people attended a meeting in a three-day program (June 18-20) organised by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in the villages at the border of Sukma and Bijapur Districts in Chhattisgarh, reports Hindustan Times on June 26. Police said that about 300 armed Maoists and more than 500 ‘jan militias’ were deployed to protect the area where the meeting was held. As per the report, top Maoist leaders including the new ‘general secretary’ of CPI-Maoist Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju, ‘head’ of battalion number of 1, Mandavi Hidma, Kosa, Devji and Sujata also attended the meeting. A Police officer said, “during the meeting, a senior-level discussion took place over the successor of Maoist leader Ravula Srinivas alias Ramanna (56), who died in December 2019 and was in charge of Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC). A review meeting of tactical counter offensive campaign or TCOC, in which Maoists carry out attacks between April and July every year also took place.”

A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) trooper, identified as M.L. Chouhan, was injured after the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres attacked him with stone in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on June 27, reports The Pioneer. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, the incident took place when the CISF troopers, on a routine patrol in guarding the mine area of the National Mineral Development Corp (NMDC) in Kirandul and Bacheli areas in the District. When Assistant Sub Inspector M.L. Chouhan and Constable Vijay Kumar were close to Akash Nagar mining area, a group of Maoists, pretending to be civilians and armed with bows and arrows, suddenly came to the spot. "They asked Chouhan to surrender his walkie-talkie to them. When he refused, they hit him on his head with a stone and injured him," the SP said adding that the Maoists then snatched his walkie-talkie and the mobile phones of the two personnel before escaping from the spot.

Namvala Keshav Rao alias Gagananna alias Prakash alias Vasav Raj alias Raju alias Umesh is currently General Secretary of CPI-Maoist and a member of its Politburo and Central Committee. Mupalla Lakshman Rao alias Ganpati alias Ramanna alias Shrinivas Rao alias Dayanand alias Chandrashekhar is a member of the Politburo and Central Committee. Kattam Sudarshan alias Anand alias Mohan alias Mohan Tekam alias Mahesh alias Dulla is also a Politburo and Central Committee member. Whereas Mallojula Venugopal alias Viveek alias Bhupati alias Sonu alias Lakshanna is too a Politburo and Central Committee member and spokesperson of the organisation. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Bheema Markam (22), carrying a cash reward of INR 200,000 on his head surrendered before the Police in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on June 30, reports The Pioneer. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallav said that, Markam, a resident of Katekalyna in the said District, was involved in the October 30, 2018 Nilawaya ambush in the District in which a Doordarshan cameraman and three Policemen were killed. Markam was also part of a Maoist team that attacked a Police convoy in 2019 at Petedabba in the District, the SP said adding that he had joined the CPI-Maoist in 2014 and was a member of the Maoist platoon number 24 active under ‘Malangir Area Committee’.
