Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a civilian identified as Pradip Sheel, supervisor and attacked an iron ore mining site in Dongar hills in Aamdai Ghati in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on July 3, reports Hindustan Times. CPI-Maoist cadres also set ablaze four proclaimer excavator machines and two Hyva trucks besides other machinery and injured construction workers engaged in the road construction work. CPI-Maoist pamphlets were distributed to the workers at the construction site by Maoists before escaping into the forests, said Bastar, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P.

A 32-year-old villager was killed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on July 12, reports NDTV. Police said, the dead body of Baman Poyam, a native of Ambeli village under Kutru Police Station limits, was found inside a forest, about five kilometres away from his village. As per preliminary information, some unidentified Maoists abducted the victim from his house on July 11 night and later killed him with sharp weapons. The exact reason behind the killing was not yet known.

The ‘commander’ of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘Darbha division’, Vinod alias Hemla Hunga (62), has died of Covid in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on July 12, reports The Times of India. Hemla Hunga (62), who had joined Left Wing Extremism in 1997, was accused in the massacre of Congress leaders in Jheeram ghati in May 2013 and of masterminding the assassination of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Bhima Mandavi in April 2019. There was a bounty of INR 1.5 million on him — INR 1 million announced by Chhattisgarh Police and INR 500,000 by National Investigation Agency (NIA).

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an encounter with Security Force (SF) personnel in forests in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on July 13, reports The Times of India. Police claim to have killed around four Maoists in the encounter, however body of only of them was recovered. A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel sustained injuries in the encounter. Bastar range, Inspector General of Police (IGP), P Sundarraj, said, “A joint team of 222nd and 196th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force from Usoor and Galgam camps, was out on road safety and searching on Tuesday [July 13] when around 3.30 pm an encounter broke out with the rebels. The battle went on for about 45 minutes while reinforcements of Special Task Force [STF] and CRPF were sent to the spot. During the search, security personnel found uniformed body of a Maoist." The IGP said that another man who got injured in the faceoff was identified as Kottam Soma, who is a villager.

Security Forces (SFs) killed three cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in an exchange of fire at Bhairamgarh in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on July 15, reports The New Indian Express. Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, “Based on the intelligence inputs about the movement of Maoists in the region, a team of District Reserve Guards (DRG) left on a search operation. There was an encounter at around 6 pm at the hilly terrain of Dholkal and Pedapal. Three Maoists were killed. The bodies have been identified.” The bodies of three Maoists, identified as Birju Kakem, Jaggu Kakem and Ajay Poyami, were recovered from the site. Three country-made firearms, kit bags, a three-kilograms Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and items of daily use were also recovered. Birju, a ‘militia platoon commander’, and Jaggu, ‘deputy chief’ of the ‘Range party committee' of Maoists, were carrying rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads, the official said.

A villager identified as Mura Kudiam (50) was allegedly attacked and killed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Nukanpal village under Modakpal Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on July 16, reports The New Indian Express. Police said, the incident took place in Nukanpal village, where Kudiam, had gone to attend a family function. As per preliminary information, some armed Maoists dressed as civilians surrounded Kudiam, a native of Usoor area, and attacked him multiple times with sharp-edged weapons and sticks in front of villagers, the official said. Later, Maoists dumped Kudiam's body on the road, before fleeing the scene, he said, adding that the exact cause for the attack is yet to be ascertained.

A group of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres allegedly killed Parshuram Bhujia (35) on suspicion that he was a ‘police informer’ at his native Aama Mora village under Mainpur Police Station limits in Gariabandh District of Chhattisgarh on July 16, reports devdiscourse.com. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Gariabandh, Sukhnandan Rathore, said, a group of armed rebels, active on the other side of the inter-State border, stormed into the village and attacked Bhujia with sharp-edged weapons, killing him on the spot. “Maoist pamphlets recovered from the spot claim that the deceased was acting as an informer for the Odisha police,'' Rathore said, adding that a search operation has been launched in the area to trace the Maoists.

Eleven persons who had gone missing from a village in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh a couple of days ago, were abducted by cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and released on July 20, reports Hindustan Times. Police, on July 21, said, the villagers were allegedly warned against supporting Police and developmental works by the rebels. “After the intervention and pressure of the media and local tribal leaders, the Maoists released the villagers who had reached their village Kunded, on Tuesday [July 20] night. All of them are safe,” Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P said. According to IGP, Sundarraj, seven persons had initially gone missing after attending a social gathering on July 18. A day later, four others, including a village head, had reportedly gone to hold talks with the rebels on the abduction but did not return. The IGP added that the statement of the 11 villagers will be recorded to ascertain the reason behind their abduction. However, according to people familiar with the matter, said, the rebels suspected the seven villagers had appeared for a Police recruitment test, and hence, may have taken them into captivity.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a former colleague, Raju Venjam (28), who had quit their outfit and was leading a normal life in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on July 20, reports India Today. The rebels abducted Verma on July 18, when he was working at his field in Padeda village under Kotwali Police Station limits, Police said. The dead body of Verma, bearing injuries inflicted by sharp weapons, was found lying on a road near the village on July 20 morning. As per preliminary information, the deceased, who was associated with banned CPI-Maoist for a long time, returned to his village a few years back and since then he was doing farming, Police said. The victim had not officially surrendered before authorities, Police added.

Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres surrendered before Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallav, as part of the ongoing rehabilitation policy Lone Varratu (home return) in Kirandul in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on July 25, reports Pragativadi. The arrested Maoist identified as Tiger Hunga, was with the Maoists for 21 years, and operated in Kistaram region and was involved in several attacks on forces on the borders of the two States – Chhattisgarh and Telangana. Hunga had joined the Maoists in 2001 as a ‘Bal Sangham’ member under Suryam Anna. Over the next six years, he was trained in Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and weapon handling, and then made ‘chief’ of Dandakaranya Kisan Majdoor Sangh (DKMS) in Karigudam region. The gunfight took place in the wee hours at a forest near Minpa village under Chintagufa Police Station limits, when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were out on a search operation, Sukma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma, said, adding, the exchange of fire lasted for about one-and-a-half hours following which the rebels escaped into the forest. Later, the body of a male Maoist was recovered from the spot, whose identity is yet to be ascertained. SP, Sharma, said, blood stains found at the site indicate that many other Maoists were either injured or killed in the face-off, but their colleagues managed to take them inside the forest.

Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, the cadres, who were with the Malangir ‘area committee’, gave themselves up at the Kirandul Police Station, citing their disappointment with the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ideology. Of the 11, Rambati Barse (24), carrying a reward of INR 100,000 on her head, was a Krantikari Adivasi Mahila Sangathan (KAMS) ‘president’ of the CPI-Maoist, while, the others were associated with the outlawed Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML)'s frontal wings. The identities of the other surrenderees are yet to be ascertained.
