A tribal shot dead in an ‘encounter’ eight days ago was an innocent villager and not a cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), Police in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh admitted on February 1, reports The Times of India. Police claim Manuram Nureti was caught in ‘crossfire’ during the encounter between District Reserve guard (DRG) and Maoists in a forest in the wee hours of January 24. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) reported, a CPI-Maoist cadre was killed in an encounter with Security Force (SF) personnel near a bridge in a forest, located about six kilometers from Bharanda Police Station in Narayanpur District on January 24. This stands rectified.

Tadkel ‘militia’ member Kumma, a resident of Bijapur village under Toyanar Panchayat (village level local-self-Government institution) of Bhairamgarh Area Committee, stricken by the hollow ideology of Maoists, surrendered before Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Vinay Kumar Singh and Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP). So far 500 Maoists have surrendered in Dantewada under the “Lone Varratu” campaign.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres set ablaze a soil testing machine engaged in bridge construction work in Pamed area in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 4 (today), reports bhaskar.com. The work of bridge construction has been started a few days ago on the Chintawagu River in Pamed area, about 80 kilometres from the Bijapur District Headquarters, and the machine was installed for soil testing on the banks of the river as the work was still in the initial stage. A camp of Security Forces (SFs) has been set up at the other end of the river, where the machines are kept for safety at the end of the work. When the Maoists who arrived in more than five in numbers in the night, put diesel in the machine and set it on fire, the soldiers fired paralite from the camp of the Security Forces (SFs) located on the other side of the river, due to which the Maoists fled.

Ten cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) surrendered on separate incidents in Sukma and Dantewada Districts of Chhattisgarh on February 8, reports ibc24.in. In the first incident, Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DAKMS) ‘chief’ Dashrath alias Kotulu Mandvi (29), Mangadu Nuppo (27), and Motu Kuhadami (24) surrendered at Dantewada with a reward of INR 100,000 each on their heads, an official said. DAKMS is a frontal organisation of the CPI-Maoist. In the second incident, seven Maoists identified as Kunjami Kosa (23), Kunjami Ganga (31), Nagesh Vanjami (25), Kawasi Hinga (31), Sodi Lakma (44), Kartami Hunga (20) and Kunjami Zayke (45), all residents of Jangampal area under Kukanar Police Station limits, surrendered in Sukma District, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Sharma said.

When a team of CRPF's 153rd battalion from Chinnakodepal camp was out on an area domination operation, and was cordoning off the forest along Murkinar road, located around 450 kilometres away from State capital Raipur, the Maoists detonated the IED in which four personnel sustained injuries.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres shot dead a Congress worker in Tadmer village in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 9, reports abplive.com. This incident took place late on February 9 night when Ghanshyam Mandavi, the husband of the lady Sarpanch (head of the Panchayat, village-level local self-Government institution) of Adawali Panchayat and a Congress worker, had come to Tadmer village to attend the wedding ceremony. The Maoists arrived in plain clothes there, called Mandavi and shot him dead outside the wedding ceremony, and fled from the spot after carrying out the incident. Although the reason for the murder has not been revealed yet, but it is being told that the Maoists have executed the killing by accusing him of an ‘Police informer’.

Armed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres abducted a sub-engineer and a head mason, involved in bridge construction work under the Bedre Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 11, reports The Indian Express. The workers were also threatened by the Maoists to stop work at the site. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P, who is in-charge of Bastar range, said, “As per primary information, engineer Ashok Pawar (38) and worker Anand Yadav (27), both residents of neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, were taken hostage by Maoists from a construction site near Bedre-Nugur villages at around 1pm [IST] on Friday [February 11, 2022],” adds Hindustan Times. The bridge measuring 700 metres is one of the expansive bridges being built on the Indravati River to connect Bijapur and Narayanpur Districts in Bastar division. It will connect Bedre to Abujhmad, which is a threat to Maoists. Work on the bridge started 5 months ago and is still on the initial stages. Since it is a sensitive bridge, security has been provided to the construction workers.

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer was killed during an exchange of fire with cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) at Timmapur-Putkel area under Basaguda Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 12 (today), reports moneycontrol.com. The encounter took place when a CRPF patrol comprising personnel from the 'F company' of its 168th battalion was out for a road opening and sanitising duty, and subsequently during the encounter, Assistant Commandant SB Tirkey, suffered bullet injuries and later succumbed to his injuries. An encounter broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Kosronda area under Tadoki Police Station limits in Kanker District of Chhattisgarh late on February 17, reports The Print. Based on a tip-off about the presence of senior Maoist cadres, an operation was launched and the security personnel were dispatched to the area, Superintendent of Police (SP), Shalabh Sinha said, adding, as the Police team reached Kosronda, ultras opened fire, prompting the personnel to launch a retaliatory action. During a search at the encounter site on February 18 morning, drag marks of bodies were found at the scene, indicating a possibility of damage suffered by Maoists. It is being told that there was heavy firing from both the sides. More than 500 rounds of bullets have been fired in the 40-minute encounter. In this, many Maoists have been claimed to have been killed and injured, however, neither the body of any Maoist nor any weapon was recovered from the spot, though, during the search, marks of being dragged away have definitely been found. Some daily consumable items were also recovered from the encounter spot.

The attached agricultural land is situated at Rajnandgaon District which is in the name of Ashvini Varma and his younger brother Tamesh Verma. ED initiated Investigation under PMLA on the basis of First Information Report (FIR) registered by Chhattisgarh Police and Final Report dated October 30, 2018 under section 13, 21, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 1967, against Ashvini Varma and others in the matter of assisting the banned Naxal organization. The investigation conducted under PMLA revealed that Ashvini Varma had received the money in the form of demonetized currency from the Maoists and gave this money to different persons and local farmers against purchase of grains and agricultural products. The encounter took place in a forest near Burgum village under Aranpur police station limits when a team of the District Reserve Guard was out on an anti-Naxal operation, and after the face-off ended, the body of a Maoist was recovered, Superintendent of Police (SP), Siddharth Tiwari said, adding that the deceased, identified as Arjun alias Lakhma Sodi (34), was carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on his head. Sodi was active as the ‘militia commander in-charge’ of Malanger area committee of Maoists, and was involved in 13 incidents of violence, including of murder, attempt to murder and abduction. Amid the shrinking footprints of Maoists in Chhattisgarh, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to set up more Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in the State soon to increase its operational dominance in the so-called 'Red Corridor' region, reports odishatv.in February 24. According to CRPF officials, the force has 34 operative FOBs in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) regions while it was decided to add up 25 more by the end of 2022. "So far, 11 bases have been set up and the rest will be added up by the end of this year," an official said. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in March 2021, had tasked the CRPF to set up six FOBs each on Bheji-Chintagufa axis, Kistaram-Chintalnar axis, Basaguda-Pamed axis, Basaguda-Jagargunda axis, and the Usoor-Pamed axis. As per the force officials, the four FOBs - Elarmadugu, Kollaiguda, Karigundam, and Potakpalli - on the Bheji-Chintagufa axis have been set up while Minapa, Elmagunda and Mukram Nala on the Kistaram-Chintalnar axis, Tarrem and Mokur on Basaguda-Pamed axis, and Dharmavaram and Galgam on Usoor-Pamed axis have been established. The CRPF officials said that the pending FOB at Silger on Basaguda-Pamed axis, T-Junction, Kunded, Bedre on Basaguda-Jagargunda axis and Nabmi on Usoor-Pamed axis will be taken up this year. The FOBs will be better fortified while the security forces will be equipped with the latest weapons, bullet and land mine proof vehicles and better medical facilities.

Two women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were gunned down by Security Forces (SFs) following an exchange of fire in the forested terrain of Durda in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 27, reports The New Indian Express. Kamal Lochan Kashyap, Bijapur District Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “Based on an intelligence input about the movement of Maoists in the region, a joint team of the Bijapur district reserve guards (DRG) and CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] was out on a search operation. When the forces arrived close to the forested terrain of Durda, about 30 km from the district headquarters, an encounter ensued. Two bodies of women cadres in uniform of the banned outfit were recovered from the site.” There was however no report of any injury sustained by the SFs that safely returned, the SP said, adding the Bijapur Police are identifying the bodies. The SFs also recovered one locally-made rifle, ammunition and explosives.

A trooper from the Special Task Force (STF) of the Chhattisgarh Police was injured in a firing between Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and the Security Forces (SFs) at a newly set up Police camp at Potakpalli village under Kistaram Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on February 28 night, reports The New Indian Express. The STF and other units were stationed in the camp, which was established last month in Potakpalli, located over 450 kilometres from capital Raipur, and considered as a core area of Maoists. The Maoists opened fire with rifles and Under-Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGLs) at a newly set up Police camp. "The exchange of fire lasted for around two hours, following which the ultras escaped into dense forests. An STF jawan sustained minor injury in the skirmish and was administered treatment at the camp itself," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P said, adding that his condition was said to be normal.
