Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People's War group (PWG) blasted a cinema theatre in Kadapa and attacked a Mandal Parishad Territorial Council (MPTC) member and a sarpanch (village headman) in Nalgonda district, on March 1. Media reports said approximately 13 Naxalites entered the Krishna Cinema at Sandupalli in Kadapa and enquired about Gangi Reddy, a Telagu Desham Party (TDP) worker and owner of the theatre. When he was not found they blasted the theatre using landmines and other explosive material. Separately, Naxalites attacked a MPTC member and a sarpanch (headman) in Ramachandrapuram tanda of Mattampally mandal (administrative unit).

Addressing a press conference in Puttaparti, Anantpur district, on March 2, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs ID Swami said top priority is being accorded to modernization of the police forces in left-wing extremist—Naxalite—affected States. He said the Union government is trying to strengthen the police set-up in these States and has allocated Rs 1,000 crores for procuring state-of-the-art communication and surveillance equipment and modern weaponry. While the earlier allocation to the modernization of the police stood at a paltry Rs 100 crore, the present allocation went up to Rs 1000 crores, he pointed out.

Police also recovered a kit bag, a country-made gun, two bombs and some ammunition from the encounter-site. Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) blasted the house of a local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and set fire to a telephone exchange in Muthanakaluva village, under the KV Palli police station-limits, Chittoor district, on March 8-night. Media reports said approximately 40 Naxalites went to the house of TDP leader Gangi Reddy and called his family members out. The Naxalites reportedly beat up Reddy branding him as police informer. Subsequently, they planted explosives and blasted the house. Separately, the Naxalites went to the telephone exchange and asked the owner of a grocery shop, housed in the same building, to vacate and later set fire to the building. Police suspect that the Talakona dalam (squad) of the PWG might have been involved in the incident.

Media reports said, two left wing extremists––Naxalites––of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist [CPI-ML Janashakthi], were killed in an encounter at a tribal hamlet of Vattimalla village, Konaraopeta mandal (administrative unit) in Andhra Pradesh’s Karimnagar district, on March 8. Karimnagar district police chief R.S. Praveen Kumar informed that the Naxalites had attacked a team of special police parties and the local police while searching the area. While two Naxalites were killed in the encounter, their associate escaped. A Chinese-made pistol and a grenade were recovered from encounter-site.

In another incident, Naxalites of the Communist Party of India––Marxist-Leninist [CPI-ML] (Pratighatana) group beat a tendu leaf contractor to death in Gangaram village of Kataram mandal, Karimnagar district, on March 11. Media reports said three armed Naxalites went to the house of the contractor, Bandam Adi Reddy, and took him into the forest where three others joined them and thrashed him severely demanding a ransom of Rs 4 lakhs as party fund. They asked him to pay the amount by March 30 and warned of serious consequences if he failed to do so. After his return from the forest, Adi Reddy complained of stomachache in the house and began vomiting and later succumbed to internal injuries.

In an encounter between police and a group of left-wing extremists––Naxalites––of the banned People's War Group (PWG), a central committee (the apex body of the PWG) member (CCM) and three other cadres were killed in Laxmipur forests, Bellampalli sub-division, Adilabad district, on March 25. There was some confusion over the identity of the dead CCM. Reports said he bears the alias Chandranna and could be either be Pullur Prasad Rao or Sande Rajamouli. Both carry a head money of INR.12 lakh. The correct identity of the CCM was not known, when reports last came in. In all, four Naxalites were killed in the exchange of fire. The other three are Sudarshan, Ravinder alias Madavi Rao and Bharat alias Pendra Bujji Rao. Also, five weapons and four kit bags were recovered from the encounter-site. State Director General of Police Peravaram Ramulu and other police officials visited the spot later in the day.
