Kurasam Mothi Bai alias Madhavi (40), Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) south Bastar division committee secretary and wife of North Telangana Special Zonal Committee (NTSZC) secretary Chandranna, and two others were arrested by the Police after a 20-km-long chase on the Bhadrachalam-Kothagudem main road near Palvancha town in Khammam District on June 3, reports The Hindu. According to Police sources, the other two arrestees were identified as A. Prudvi (22), a student of integrated MA course of Hyderabad Central University and his father A. Dharmaraju (50), a railway employee of Chirala in Prakasam District. Sources said that the car carrying the trio overturned after hitting a roadside pole while negotiating an empty jeep kept as a road barrier by the local Police at Peddamma Thalli temple, a few km from Palvancha. It is suspected that Madhavi was heading towards Vijayawada to undergo treatment for an ailment. It is suspected that Prudvi was associated with a student organisation, a “secret” frontal organisation of the banned outfit, he said, adding that further investigations were under way to ascertain the antecedents of the duo. The Times of India adds that Prudvi confessed that he had left the campus a few months back to join the Maoist party. Prudvi also claimed that he was a member of the Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika of the Hyderabad Central University.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has called upon separate Telangana protagonists to take up the proposed ‘Chalo Assembly’ on June 14 as a militant struggle, reports The Hindu. In a statement released on June 11, Jagan, spokesman of the North Telangana Special Zonal Committee (NTSZC) called upon the people to ensure the success of the demonstration in spite of refusal of permission by the Police. City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma’s recent statements exposed the intention to unleash repression on the agitating activists, but people should demonstrate yet again that they would not be deterred by such actions. He criticised the political parties for diluting the agitation with an eye on the next elections.

Andhra Pradesh and Odisha Police have come up with a joint strategy to increase surveillance on borders to check the movement of the Maoists, reports The Times of India on June 12. As part of the strategy, the Border Security Force (BSF) would support the Police of the two States by setting up base camps in Naxalite [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] stronghold areas. The BSF, which was asked to eliminate the Maoists in Koraput and Malkangiri in Odisha, has been in the forefront of combing activities in Odisha. BSF troopers have discovered more than 20 Maoist dumps in both Malkangiri and Koraput Districts in the past one-and-half years. The BSF would now focus entirely on nipping the Maoist squads to restrict their movement. It has already established camps, with at least 100 troopers (an entire company) in each camp, in the region. There are a total of 30 such camps in some of the sensitive areas in Malkangiri alone with 20 more in Koraput. Now, the Sarukubanda and Nakkamamidi camps in Malkangiri have joined the list. The Odisha authorities set up the Nakkamamidi camp three weeks ago while Sarukubanda camp was set up a week ago.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Vijayawada discussed on how to prevent the possible Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) attacks and other crimes on moving trains or on isolated railway stations, reports The Hindu. At a security meeting held in Vijayawada, GRP Superintendent of Police Ch. Syam Prasad, Guntakal Division Railway SP Munu Swamy, RPF Divisional Security Commissioner Ramesh Chandra and officers from about 10 Districts talked about impending threats to the railway passengers and properties. The railway Police were asked to carry weapons compulsorily while on beat duties. The The officers decided to conduct joint beats on moving trains and on platforms, particularly in Maoist-affected Districts, forests and danger zones. The GRP or the RPF can open fire, if necessary on thieves to protect themselves and the passengers, said the officials. The GRP SPs and the RPF divisional chief said that the Police should be alert while on the moving trains in the Maoist-dominated areas and keenly observe the bushes and forests along the tracks.
