A top Naxalite (left-wing extremist) leader, Riyaz Khan, who had participated in the peace talks with the Andhra Pradesh Government during October 2004, was reportedly killed along with three others in an encounter with the police in Karimnagar district in the early hours of July 1, today. Riyaz, ‘state committee’ member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (Janashakthi group), a ‘district committee’ member Srisailam alias Vijay and a woman member were among those who died in an exchange of fire with a special police party on the outskirts of Bandanakal village, about 90 km from Karimnagar, said Superintendent of Police, Devender Singh Chowhan said. While the identity of the woman cadre and the fourth Naxalite was yet to be established, six others managed to escape from the incident site. The police also recovered three revolvers, a springfield rifle and some ammunition from the spot, Chowhan added.

One civilian was killed and 10 others, including five police personnel, were injured when a bomb, allegedly planted by left wing extremists (also known as Naxalites) exploded at the out-patient ward in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital in Warangal on July 2. The bomb was placed in a tiffin box and left under cement benches in the ward where a number of civilians and 15 undertrial prisoners from Warangal Central Jail were awaiting their turn. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), demanding a separate Telangana state, on July 4 pulled out five of its six ministers from the Andhra Pradesh Government and threatened to leave the United People's Alliance (UPA) coalition at the Centre, citing serious differences with the Congress over the handling of the Naxalite problem. The TRS, also unhappy with the Congress because 'not much progress' has been made on the Telangana statehood issue, has been protesting the Andhra Pradesh Police action against Naxalites. The TRS also has five members in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) and two ministers at the Centre.

According to The Hindu, on July 8, police unearthed a left wing extremists’ (also known as Naxalite) den belonging to the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML Praja Pratighatana outfit) at Mirpet under Saroornagar police limits in Warangal district and recovered a huge amount of cash, fixed deposit certificates and other assets, all worth Rupees 44 lakh. Three Naxalites, including a women activist, were arrested while a senior cadre managed to escape. The police also seized a country-made revolver, six rounds of ammunition and 50 gelatine sticks.

The Adilabad district police in Andhra Pradesh have seized illegal weapons and ammunition meant to be delivered to left-wing extremists (also known as Naxalites) of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) on July 13, according to The Hindu. The Superintendent of Police, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, said police parties of Wankidi and Asifabad stations arrested three youths during a vehicle-checking operation at Wankidi and recovered two company-made 9mm pistols, one .32 pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition, one country-made .32 pistol, .38 mm revolver and 15 rounds of ammunition. The arrested include the son of a Sub-Inspector of Police from Maharashtra, Sanjay Sandeep Khare, and the other two were identified as Syed Akhar Ali and Butti Tirupathi, from Vani village in the Yavatmal district of Maharashtra.
