On August 21, inaugurating a national seminar at Hyderabad Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh asked Naxalite and other extremist groups to eschew violence and test their popularity in elections. He stated: "I have said this to the Hurriyat in Kashmir, the ULFA in Assam, and to the naxalite brethren in Andhra Pradesh." Dr. Singh said that extremism in any form based on any divisive ideology of hatred could not be tolerated in a civilised democratic society. He added, "Go ask the people to vote for you and support you. Come to the legislature and enact the laws that you wish to see in place. By all means use the media to convey your views and use the legislature to convert them into policies. In a democracy the power of the people flows through the ballot box and not from the barrel of a gun."
