Cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a 45-year-old shopkeeper at Sringeri in the Chikmagalur district on June 3-night, suspecting him to be a police informer. Eight Maoists descended on the shop of Venkatesh in Gandaghatti village after warning his wife and son, residing in the adjacent house, not to venture out. They assaulted the shopkeeper before firing at him from point blank range. The Maoists also set ablaze Venkatesh’s motorcycle. Before fleeing, they left behind pamphlets with a message that read: "Let us expose informers and teach them a befitting lesson". Police sources said that the attack could be in reaction to the killing of a Maoist, identified as Dinakar, by the police at Kigga in Sringeri in December 2006.

Ten persons suspected to have links with the Naxalites (left-wing extremist) were arrested and three tonnes of opium worth INR 4 crore was recovered from them by the Jharkhand Police on June 3, reports The Indian Express. According to police, an inter-state gang with Naxalite links is responsible for the cultivation and sale of opium in Jharkhand. Hazaribagh district Superintendent of Police, Praveen Singh, said, “A well established gang with its base in the interiors of Chatra district seems to be engaged in the clandestine opium business”. According to Chatra Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Jha, as many as 18-20 people in three separate areas Pathalgada, Giddor and Rajpur of the Chatra district had been cultivating poppy on their land. A power blackout caused by Maoists in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh has reportedly further worsened as they brought down three more high-tension power transmission towers in the Bastar region. So far, Maoists have blasted eight high-tension electricity transmission towers in the State since June 1, leading to power breakdown in the Dantewada, Bijapur, Narayanpur and Bastar districts. The health sector and water supply services are the worst affected in the region. A senior State-run National Mineral Development Corporation official told IANS, "Iron ore production and transportation to the domestic market and exports to China and Japan have come to a complete halt since the past five days and would continue to suffer for a week." According to police, the Maoists are disrupting power installations in order to target government offices, the police and even tribals who are part of the Salwa Judum (anti-Maoist movement).

Statesman quoting intelligence agencies reports that finding it difficult to intrude into India through the Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan borders, militant outfits have now changed their intrusion route to the 2.9 million-square kilometer Indian coast, where it is easy to dodge the scarcely deployed coastal guards. Kashmir-based militant groups have earmarked certain soft routes in the western coastal areas to intrude into India. “At least half a dozen such incidents have recently been reported, where terrorists entered into India either by bribing those guarding the coastal areas or by dodging their eyes,” revealed an unidentified officer of a central intelligence agency. The officer also said that “Most of the arms and ammunition smuggled into India either for terrorists, Naxalites or other organised criminals, are coming through the coastal regions.” Interrogation of militants who were arrested by security agencies in Kashmir and wireless intercepts of terrorist conversations have also revealed the intrusion plans of the terrorists into the country. The Union Ministry of Defence has reportedly submitted a $700 million plan to buy military equipment for the coast guard to replace the obsolete technology of coastal patrolling.

According to The Hindu, security forces (SF) have been put on high alert in several states including Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, following a two-day economic blockade, reportedly announced by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) on June 26-27. Intelligence agencies suspect that Maoists, numbering more than 20,000, could target industries and the railways to disrupt the mining activity in Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand. The blockade was reportedly planned to oppose the formation of Special Economic Zones and the policies of Central and State governments, "which are playing into the hands of multi-national companies," said a Maoist statement issued in Orissa on June 20. However, the Central Committee of the party has not issued a statement announcing the blockade; the statements were issued by the State committees only. "We have noticed many posters announcing the blockade on the borders of Jharkhand with Orissa and West Bengal. We suspect that the naxals (left-wing extremists) could indulge in violence because they have been getting hit in Jharkhand and Bihar," Gauri Shankar Rath, Additional Director-General of Police, Jharkhand, told The Hindu.

Cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), on June 27, stormed a railway station, set fire to the stationmaster’s office and rigged the tracks with explosives, reports Telegraph. The pre-dawn attack occurred at Biramdih station in Purulia, close to the Jharkhand border. Maoists also pasted posters on the walls and pillars on the station premises before fleeing. The posters condemned the "genocide" in Nandigram — where 14 land protesters were killed in March 2007 in clashes with police — and warned the government against setting up special economic zones in the State. An explosive device planted by the Maoists below the tracks was later recovered and defused by the security forces. West Bengal Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said a probe has been ordered.
