A terrorist of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) was killed in encounter at Sardhar outpost, 28 kilometers from Rajkot, on December 7. The incident took place when the terrorist, who was arrested, attempted to escape by snatching a security force personnel’s gun and opening fire. In the retaliatory firing, the arrested terrorist was killed. Earlier, during preliminary questioning he had reportedly revealed that the JeM was responsible for smuggling in RDX and arms seized by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from Patan in October 2001. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in a joint operation with the Anti-Terrorist Squad recovered around 5.20 kg of RDX, hand grenades, mines, accessories for assembling bombs, and a site plan, in Patan district, on December 17. This was almost at the same spot where a huge cache of arms and ammunition were seized in October 2001. Police on December 19 recovered approximately 35 kg of RDX, detonation fuse wire and an AK-47 rifle, allegedly smuggled from across the border, during combing operations 40 km north of the Hajipir-Bhiata area, Banni grasslands, in the Rann of Kutch. Police sources said they acted on a tip-off by a Pakistani infiltrator arrested on May 27, 2001 and currently lodged at the Joint Interrogation Centre in Bhuj. The infiltrator, Muzamil, believed to a terrorist of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), reportedly told police that he had cross into India with four others. Police in Surat, on December 28, arrested 123 persons for their alleged links with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) after raiding a meeting venue. Police also seized some incriminating documents from their possession. The City police chief said the arrested persons had reached the city to attend a meeting and they belonged to different parts of the country. They have been arrested under the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act. Read less...
