Tension erupted between Kukis and Meities community after a solidarity march taken out by All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) against the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list turned violent and a Meitei villages in Torbung areas of Churachandpur District was attacked by the ATSUM members on May 4. The Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh on May 8 stated that around 60 people lost their lives, 231 people suffered injuries and around 1700 houses, including temples and churches were burnt down in incidents since May 3, reports The Hindustan Times. The Chief Minister also confirmed that 35,655 people were evacuated from their homes to safer locations and stated that the government has taken several steps to bring back the stranded people from different parts of the state like Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Imphal West, Imphal East and Kangpokpi Districts. Also, the Supreme Court on May 8, asked the Centre and the Manipur government to take necessary steps for raising security and relief and rehabilitation efforts for those hit by ethnic violence in the state, after taking note of submissions that no untoward incidents have been reported there in the last two days, East Mojo reports.

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati in Kamrup Metropolitan District in Assam on May 24, convicted a person identified as Mohammad Saidul Alam, a resident of Hojai District in Assam and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a 2018 conspiracy case related to the formation of a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) module, reports NDTV. An NIA official stated that during 2017-2018, Alam along with two other convicts in the case had organised a series of meetings in various mosques in Hojai District. The meetings were used to spread the HM’s hardcore fundamentalist ideology and youths attending these meetings were told about the need to raise a module of HM for committing terrorist acts. Alam had also conspired to raise funds for procurement of arms and ammunition and had installed blackberry messenger (BBM) App on his mobile to stay in touch with HM cadres in Jammu and Kashmir.
