A joint team of Nagarik Suraksha Mancha and the Mizo Convention submitted a memorandum to Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb protesting the proposed settlement. More than 40,000 Brus have been living in six refugee camps in northern Tripura’s Kanchanpur and Panisagar subdivisions since 1997. About 7,000 refugees had returned to Mizoram after nine phases of repatriation till November 30, 2019.

The arrestee was involved in hoisting ULFA-I flag in Joypur and Naharkatia on November 27, 2019. A one .22mm pistol with magazine and two rounds were recovered. According to sources, he was directly working under ULFA-I militant ‘lieutenant’ Abhijeet Gogoi alias AisengAsom.

Naga Hoho, the apex body of Nagas in Nagaland on May 4 appealed for United Nations(UN) intervention by alleging violations of human rights in Naga areas in the Northeast India and northwestern part of Myanmar, reports The Telegraph. In a letter to UN secretary general António Guterres, Hoho President H.K. Zhimomi and General Secretary K. Elu Ndang also urged him to recognise the Nagas as indigenous people under the United Nations’ Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People. It also urged UN to direct India to settle Naga political issue by honouring the framework agreement of 2015.

Seven militants of Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) were arrested from Chakrashila reserve forest in Kokrajhar District of Assam on May 7, reports The Telegraph. The arrestees were identified as ‘area commander’ Lankeshwar Koch alias Lambu, Sukit Barman, Sanjit Barman, Mamin Ray, Biplob Barman, Panchanon Ray and Gautam Ray. Seven pistols, seven magazines, 24 live bullets, five empty cartridges and extortion notes were recovered from the arrestees. The KLO militants were trying to gain prominence after the surrender of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). The KLO’s objective is to carve out a separate Kamtapur State comprising six Districts, including Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North and South Dinajpur and Malda of Bengal and four contiguous districts of Assam, including Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Goalpara.

According to an Army press release, based on the specific input regarding presence of insurgents in Village Pumao, the troops of Indian Army launched a search operation in general area of Pumao. It also added that “Troops identified suspicious movement and started moving towards a house which drew two to three bursts of fire on Indian Army party. Civilians were told to disperse and to safeguard lives and property-controlled retaliation was reported by firing eight single shots. In all this melee insurgents managed to escape”. NSCN-IM stated that “This spirit has guided the 22 years of Indo-Naga political talks throughout. It was this mutual understanding and respect that has carried the talks this far.” NSCN-IM issued a statement following a letter from the Manipur Government to the Union Home Ministry to shift unauthorised camps from Manipur to Nagaland. In a statement by Hoho President Hekhushe Sikhu and General Secretary Nikheto Jimomi, the Hoho said that one of the major demands by the negotiating parties is increase of the legislature assembly seats, of which, if the Government of India consents, rearrangement of the present constituencies have to be carried out.
