The villagers of H Hengjang village in Kangpokpi District of Manipur, are demanding security protection from the State Government following incidents of an armed group forcing villagers to vacate their houses, reports EastMojo on February 12. The first incident was reported on the midnight of February 6, when an armed group of 10 or more people brandishing automatic assault rifles ambushed and ransacked one of the houses in the H Hengjang village, which has about 30 households with a population of 150.The armed group, identified as the Kuki National Liberation Army (KNLA), headed by Paotinthang alias Paotin Kipgen, one of the accused in the murder of Thangkhotinlet Kipgen in 2019, the then village head of K Hengjang, is behind the attack, the locals said.K Hengjang village chief Ngamkholal Kipgen said the armed group forcefully entered the village and threatened the armless villagers to vacate their houses and relocate to another location.The armed group then went on a rampage and terrified villagers, especially women and children, by openly firing a number of bullet rounds in the air. They even fired bullets at the vehicles parked nearby.

Three workers, abducted by Kuki militants in Manipur, were rescued by Security Forces (SFs) from the Kamuching forests following an encounter with the militants in Imphal East District of Manipur on February 12, reports Nagaland Post. The Police said the armed Kuki militants abducted the workers at gunpoint on February 7 when they were busy in the construction of a bridge at Leikhong near Nongpok Keithelmanbi in Thoubal District. The SFs subsequently launched a massive combing operation in possible locations and mountainous areas and the hostages were traced at the Kamuching forests. “Sensing the presence of security forces, the extremists fired at them, leading to a fierce gunfight that lasted for over two hours late on Friday [February 12] evening,” a Police official said. The Kuki ultras during the encounter managed to escape taking advantage of the thick forest and hilly terrain leaving behind the captives.The SFs subsequently rescued the three workers and recovered an AK-47 rifle from the forested areas.

On February 9, fresh tensions erupted along Assam-Mizoram border leading to many houses set ablaze and many more injured in the clashes, reports Northeast Now. Clashes broke off between the locals of the disputed Bairabi-Zophai area in Kolasib District of Mizoram and Kachurthal in Hailakandi District of Assam in the afternoon. Though there are no clear details about the number of injured persons, but certain reports from both the state claim that three to ten persons were injured in the clashes. Reports further claim that 20 houses were gutted in Assam and six farm huts set ablaze in Mizoram. Earlier in August 2020, violent clashes had broken out along the Assam-Mizoram border at the disputed Lailapur-Vairangte area.

On February 11, four National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants surrendered in Tripura, reports Northeast Now. The four militants identified as Sethi Debbarma, Rajib Debbarma, Bisharam Reang Lalong and Zawmina Reang had fled from NLFT camp at Bagaichari under Rangamati District of Bangladesh on January 31. The arrestees included two cadres of National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) apprehended from Wokha District and one cadre of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Kitovi-Neopak (NSCN-KN) apprehended from Dimapur District. An Assam Rifles release said, based on specific input, the troops arrested the three cadres, and recovered, three live rounds of 5.56mm pistol, three live rounds of 7.62mm pistol, three grams of a contraband item and 15 extortion notes mentioning a total of INR 259,000 and INR 10,190 in cash, from their possession. The AR personnel also recovered a huge consignment of contraband items worth INR 640,000 from Tengnoupal in Manipur. Confirming the news, the AR on its Twitter handle said the KYKL woman cadre was apprehended from the Upokpi Market Shed area of Bishnupur. Among the militants, most wanted militant leader, Ingti Kathar Songbijit of Peoples’ Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) and previously the chairman and commander-in-chief of National Democratic Front of Bodoland – Songbijit (NDFB-S) also surrendered. Other than PDCK, 1,039 other militants belonging to four militant outfits of Karbi Anglong - Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), United People's Liberation Army (UPLA), Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tiger (KPLT) and Karbi Liberation Front (KLF) also surrendered, reports Northeast Now. A formal ceasefire agreement with Songbijit’s PDCK and the other four outfits is expected to be signed on February 25 at Karbi Anglong in presence of Union home minister Amit Shah.
