Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an Awami League (AL) leader of Meherpur District from Dhaka on September 6 for his alleged patronisation of and involvement in outlaw activities. A RAB-1 team in Dhaka arrested, Meherpur AL organising Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul (45), from Mirpur area. He was produced before a Meherpur court on September 7 and the court sent him to Police custody. Sources said that with the arrest of Mukul, Security Forces (SFs) seem to have started a manhunt against the outlaw godfathers in the extremist infested southwest region. A high RAB official in Khulna division told that lists of so-called 'political godfathers' are being prepared and "we will bring them to book". An unnamed RAB official said a good number of outlaw godfathers hold posts of different political parties in the region. Police said Mukul is accused in six cases filed with different Police stations in Meherpur and Jessore Districts. RAB and Police sources also said that Mukul is one of the top political leaders in southwest region who has been patronising outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) for long. Sources added that Mukul was a close aide to Janajuddha faction of the PBCP (PBCP-Janajuddha) founder Abdur Rashid Malitha Tapan alias Dada Tapan, who was first arrested from Mukul's house in 1994. During that time, he was Gangni Sub-District unit AL publicity secretary. Dada Tapan was killed in an encounter with RAB-12 in Kushtia on June 18, 2008.

According to Daily Star, security agencies have prepared a fresh list of top outlaw cadres, their kingpins and political mentors in the country's south-western region as they launched a drive on September 5 to arrest the criminals. Names of 280 armed operatives of different outlaw and criminal groups, 80 linchpins and as many as 150 political mentors, often dubbed as godfather, have been included in the list, officials concerned told the Daily Star. A number of high officials of law enforcement agencies in the region confirmed that a fresh list has been made but declined to disclose the exact timeframe of the drive. The fresh list includes the most wanted criminals from terrorist outfits and criminal gangs, their armed cadres active in the region and their godfathers including a good number of leaders holding posts in major political parties, sources said. “Those people may be influential because of their political clout or other powers. When they shelter or patronise the criminals, they also become criminals in the eyes of law,” Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police of Khulna Range Sheikh Hemayat Hossain told. “Our action is now against those who are criminals,” the DIG added.
