On March 3, local JeI-ICS cadres vandalised and set fire to at least 16 offices after which 10 cases were filed with the Police accusing around 10,000 JeI-ICS cadres who later sought bail to the High Court.

The Cabinet approved on September 2 a proposed amendment to the electoral roll law to bar convicted War Criminals from being registered as voters, reports The Daily Star. As per the proposed change, the name of a person will be excluded from the electoral roll or will not be included in it if he or she is found guilty under Bangladesh Collaborators (Special Tribunal) Order, 1972 and International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973. The Government will place a bill in the upcoming session of Parliament, which begins on September 12, seeking passage of the proposed amendment to the electoral roll law.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on September 5 indicted Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Mir Quasem Ali on 14 charges, including murder, torture, abduction and confinement of people and complicity in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971, reports The Daily Star. Quasem Ali allegedly was a key leader of Chittagong District’s Al Badr unit and also featured prominently in the national Al Badr structure. Quasem Ali became the general secretary of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of JeI, on November 7, 1971. The Islami Chhatra Sangha members formed the Al-Badr force to collaborate with the Pakistani military to commit genocide and mass killing during the war.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on September 20 said that smuggling of small firearms into Bangladesh, especially pistol and revolver, through three bordering Districts has become rampant as the gunrunners have found the routes safe for their illicit trade, reports The Independent. The three Districts are Chapainwababganj, Satkhira and Jessore. Among the three Districts, most firearms are being smuggled into the country through different border points of Jessore. According to DMP, a total of 59 foreign-made pistols and 19 revolvers were recovered by Police from different parts of Dhaka city between January and July this year. The small firearms, reportedly manufactured in the Indian states of Bihar and Kolkata, are being smuggled into the country.

The deceased was identified as Fazlul Haq alias Fazlu Matbor (40). Police said, on secret information that some cadres of the party were holding a clandestine meeting at the village, a team of Police cordoned off the area and asked the outlaws to surrender. But the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight. Fazlu was died on the spot, while his accomplices managed to flee the scene. Police also recovered two LGs, one pistol, one revolver, one pipe gun, two machetes, two bombs and 20 bullets from the spot.

Saifuddin Yahia (28), ‘general secretary’ of Rajshahi University unit of ICS, is wanted for 42 cases related to murder, attacks on Police, and Shibir-sponsored criminal activities, said Rab-5 Director, Lieutenant Colonel, Anwar Latif Khan, describing the raid. RAB seized a .9mm pistol loaded with eight bullets from Yahia, 13 cocktails, two machetes, two cameras, eight mobile phones, leaflets, banners and Jihadi books. He said, “After separation of the judiciary, the trial of the war criminals is progressing with the court’s own pace and there is no scope for the government to interfere in the trial process. The issue of completing the trials quickly does not depend on the government’s will. The International Crimes Tribunal and the Appellate Division have already given their verdicts on some of the war crimes trials following international standards.
