On the other hand, BNP on October 2 spewed fire against the death sentence awarded to the party’s standing committee member, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, for war crimes, reports The Independent. In protest, the party has decided to stage nationwide rallies on October 3 (today) against the Government’s attempt to eliminate its political opponent and to destroy the country’s democratic organs in the name of war crimes trial. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said “We are expressing our condemnation of the government for its evil attempt to eliminate opposition party politics in the country. We are astonished that SQC was deprived of justice. Even the common people have raised questions over the legal process adopted to convict SQC of war crimes.”

Meanwhile, Plainclothes Police on October 3 seized the computer on which the verdict delivered by the ICT-1 against BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury was drafted, reports The Independent. Detective Branch (DB) of Police sources said they seized the computer in the afternoon to track down those involved in the ‘verdict leak plot’. The verdict without containing the court observation and judgment got posted on different websites much ahead of its pronouncement. Showing copies of the verdict collected from the websites, Salauddin’s wife claimed that the judgment against her husband was dictated and he was denied justice. She also said that the verdict circulated on the websites was originated from the Law Ministry. Turning down the allegation, State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam on Tuesday said, “It’s clear that a section is hatching conspiracies to make the verdict questionable both at home and abroad.” Later on October 2, International Crimes Tribunal Registrar Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed a General Diary (GD) with Shahbagh Police Station over the alleged leak of the verdict. However, no one was arrested in this connection.

Separately, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a meeting to exchange views with the party’s grassroots leaders at her official residence Ganobhaban in Dhaka city on October 3 said that her Government would be able to complete the trials of war criminals, like the trial of the Bangabandhu killing case, in order to make the nation free from stigma, reports The Independent. She asserted “I believe that we will be able to complete trials of war criminals who committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 so as to free the nation from stigma. The BNP cannot save them.” Accusing the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia of siding with war criminals, Hasina alleged that BNP- Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) activists have been killing people, setting them on fire, in order to save war criminals. Calling one hartal (general strike) after another, the BNP-JeI combine is carrying out vandalism across the country only to save war criminals.

Several BNP leaders also made sneering comments about the war crimes tribunal for sentencing Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death on October 3, reports The Daily Star. Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, chief of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth front of BNP said “On completion of the tenure of this government and parliament, Bangladesh will be ruled by Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. Servile ministers and judges will not be allowed to move around freely. They will be made to run around in their birthday suits and brought to trial at the people’s court.” BNP chief’s adviser Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, also vice chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, said if voted to power, the BNP would try those involved in the war crimes trials. Speaking in a similar vein, Mirza Abbas, member of the BNP standing committee, at the rally said, “The nation has not accepted the judgment …. If the verdict against Salauddin Quader is executed, the people involved with this [trial] will be charged with murder.”

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police on October 4 said that two tribunal staff, an assistant to a defence lawyer and several others were involved in leaking the draft verdict in the war crimes trial of BNP lawmaker SQ Chowdhury, reports The Daily Star. The investigators suspect that some aides to the BNP leader masterminded the leak to undermine the tribunal as well as its verdict and bribed the employees — office assistant Fakhrul Hossain and cleaner Nayon Ali — to smuggle out the document. They said that Mehedi Hasan, assistant to SQ Chowdhury’s counsel Fakhrul Islam, might have emailed the draft to the UK from where it was posted on websites. Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that the cleaner had confessed to the crime. Fakhrul Hossain had asked Nayon to give Mehedi “some documents” related to SQ Chowdhury’s trial from the tribunal’s computers. Nayon handed over Mehedi the soft copies of 165-page document in phases using pen drives. He at one stage had refused to do the task. However, he had to continue as Mehdi and Fakhrul threatened to put him in trouble.

Separately, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while addressing her party’s grassroots leaders at her Gono Bhaban residence in Dhaka city on October 9 apprehended that pro-liberation forces would be wiped out and a dangerous situation would prevail in the country if “BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)-Hefajat-e-Islam (HeI)” came to power through the next parliamentary election, reports The Daily Star. Referring to October 7’s bomb blast in a madrasa founded by a HeI leader in Chittagong District’s Lalkhan Bazaar, she said, “The BNP chairperson has been dreaming to come to power with Hefajat and anti-liberation Jamaat-Shibir. You have seen how much bombs and ammunition were being made in that madrasa. If those had not exploded, none would have known about it. The explosion might be a sign from Allah. So what answer will the BNP chairperson give to the nation? That she wants to do these kinds of criminal acts? That she wants to patronise them? That she wants to capture state power with them? These mean that she wants to turn the country into that of militancy, terrorism and conflict again if she returns to power.”
