Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shamser Mobin Chowdhury, on November 10, handed over an aide memoir to acting Indian High Commissioner, M L Tripathy refuting charges leveled by India’s Union Home Minister L K Advani, on November 7, on the presence in Bangladesh on Indian terrorists as well as of the al Qaeda terror network and Pakistan’s external intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Advani also said Bangladesh was providing covert support to Indian terrorist groups. Chowdhury also reportedly asked India to hand over criminals who had escaped a crack down by its law enforcement authorities and had fled to India. Tripathy reportedly assured full cooperation and asked for details of such escaping criminal. Further, reports said India has asked Bangladesh to close down terrorist training camps existing on its territory and hand over the terrorists taking shelter there. According to official sources, India has handed over to Dhaka a list of 99 terrorists training camps (give link news-2002/11/04 # 8), pinpointing their exact locations on Bangladeshi soil. India has also asked Bangladesh to extradite 77 terrorists, including some leaders, and nine other criminals who have been arrested by the authorities there. Tripathy, further, asked Bangladesh to deport All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) terrorist group leader Ranjit Debbarma and two Naga terrorists arrested in December 2001. He also reportedly asked for the deportation of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) general secretary Anup Chetia and his associates Babul Sharma and LP Goswamy, who he said were being treated lavishly while in imprisonment in a Bangladesh jail.

The government has also slapped a ban on buying and trading in firearms of all types, until further orders. The government has already asked people holding licensed weapons to deposit them at police stations or deputy commissioners by November 15, today. Meanwhile, stormy scenes and loud protests from the Opposition Awami League, and a brief walk, out marred the fifth session of the current Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad), on its opening day, November 14. The protest followed the Speaker’s refusal to entertain points of order raised by many Opposition Awami League lawmakers and refusal to hear Leader of the Opposition and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Opposition demanded a general discussion on the prevailing situation, Operation Clean-Heart, and the arrest of Members of Parliament, as well as custodial deaths. Home Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury told Parliament that the Army would be continued to be deployed as long as required to bring the country’s law and order situation to normal.

Indian Foreign Minister Yaswant Sinha told his country’s Parliament, on November 27, that some Al Qaeda operatives have taken shelter in Bangladesh.
