Gazi Abdul Mannan (88), Nasiruddin Ahmed (62), Shamsuddin Ahmed (60), Hafiz Uddin (66) were given death penalty. Azharul Islam (60) was sentenced to jail until death. Only Shamsuddin is now in jail while the rest are on the run.

Police on May 3 arrested five militants of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) sent back by Singaporean authorities in Dhaka city, reports Dhaka Tribune. Singapore’s Internal Security Department arrested 13 expatriate Bangladeshi workers for their alleged involvement with militant activities and plotting terror attacks. Of the arrestees, the Singaporean authorities have sent back five Bangladeshis but kept the others in custody for interrogation under the Singapore Internal Security Act (ISA). The five are Mizanur Rahman Galib alias Galib Hasan (38), Rana Miah Pilot (29), Alamgir Hossain (31), Tanzimul Islam (24), and Masud Rana (31).

Since 2013, 37 attacks took place. Of the 37 attacks, two were in 2013, 26 in 2015 and nine in 2016. The report said “The attacks claimed by the IS are actually committed by JMB while those claimed by the Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub-continent are by ABT.”

The Supreme Court (SC) on May 3 started hearing a petition filed by condemned war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) amir (chief) Motiur Rahman Nizami seeking review of its judgement that upheld his death penalty for his offences during the 1971 Liberation War, reports The Daily Star.On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) handed down the death penalty to Nizami on four charges of war crimes. On January 6, 2016, the SC upheld his death sentence on three charges. On March 29, Nizami's lawyers filed the petition praying to the apex court for his acquittal.

Ansar Al-Islam issued the statement to justify the brutal murders of LGBT rights activist Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tonoy that took place on April 25. He was stabbed in the neck and his throat was slit. Hours after the killing, Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack in an online post, says US-based SITE Intelligent Group that monitors terrorist activities globally.Earlier, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam in an interview with Reuters on May 24 said that IS is trying to ride a wave of religious radicalization by falsely claiming a spate of killings in Bangladesh, reports Dhaka Tribune. The six men are Rahman Mizanur (31), Mamun Leakot Ali (29), Miah Rubel (26), Zaman Daulat (34), Mohamad Jabath Kysar Haje Norul Islam Sowdagar (30) and Sohel Hawlader Ismail Hawlader (29). Singapore authority said that they were members of a group called Islamic State in Bangladesh (ISB). Six militants of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) were handed death sentences by a Dhaka court on May 31 for the grisly bank heist in Ashulia in April 2015, reports The Daily Star. Another accused was given a life term and two others three years' jail each while two were acquitted by the court. The condemned convicts are Borhan Uddin, Saiful alias Al Amin, Mahfuzur Islam alias Sumon alias Jamil, Jashim Uddin, Palash alias Sohel Rana and Mintu Prodhan. Ukil Hasan was handed life term while Abdul Baten and Shahjahan Jamadar three years' jail each. Mozammel Haque and Babul Sarder were acquitted.On April 21, 2015, a gang of 8-10 people aged between 25 and 40 looted BDT 35 lakh from a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank in Ashulia Industrial Area on the outskirts of Dhaka city in broad daylight. They attacked bank officials, clients and locals with sharp weapons, fired shots and hurled crude bombs while escaping the scene, leaving seven people dead. A mob later beat one of the robbers dead and handed another over to police.
