On March 3, two persons, identified as Arifur Rahman and Jahid Hasan were killed and at least 50 others, including seven Policemen were injured in a clash between Police and supporters of an Islamist organisations (identity not yet disclosed) who were demonstrating against a programme of the Ahmadiyya community at Ahmednagar in Sadar Sub-District of Panchagarh District in Rangpur Division, reports Dhaka Tribune. According to the Police, Ahmadiyyas organised a three-day Jalsa Salana, their annual gathering. The programme was scheduled to begin at noon. But leaders and activists of several Islamist organisations, including the Islamic Andolon Bangladesh, were staging demonstrations since March 2, demanding cancellation of the event. After Juma prayers on March 3, they gathered at the Chowrangi intersection, brought out a procession and started marching towards the venue and subsequently clash ensued.

He further said, “Bangladesh is a Muslim majority country where 90% people are Muslims. In this country, the Ahmadiyya community is committing reckless activities against Islam. On March 6, Home Minister (HM) Asaduzzaman Khan stated that members of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) were involved in the attack on the Ahmadiya community’s congregation in Panchagarh District in Rangpur Division, reports Prothom Alo. “Jamaat and BNP activists tried to stop the Ahmadiyya gathering. At one point, they started setting houses on fire. The programme site was also set on fire. One member of the Ahmadiyya community died. A Shibir leader who had gone there got injured and later died”, the minister said. He stated further that ‘out of the seven cases filed for the attack, 81 accused have been apprehended, including BNP leader Fazle Rabbi, who has admitted to being one of the main instigators of the incident aimed at disrupting the programme’.

He was a fugitive in a case over planning sabotage in Barishal District in 2007. On March 18, when a team DB Police went on a drug raid in the Munsirhat area of Patharghata Sub-District under Barguna District, drug dealers attacked them with sharp weapons.
