Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said in Parliament on June 1 that the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) would be banned only when the Government would decide to do so, reports New Age. In January 2009, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation secretary general Rezaul Haque Chandpuri and 24 others had filed the writ petition claiming that JeI should be disqualified as a political party because its charter violates the constitution. Following the writ petition, in August 2013, the High Court had scrapped JeI’s registration with the Election Commission (EC) and disqualified the party from contesting future polls. The case is now pending with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC).

A joint team of Detective Branch of Police, Counter Terrorism and Trans-national Crime Unit and Special Branch of Police conducted separate raids at Banashree and Shutrapur areas of Dhaka city and arrested nine militants of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) on June 7, reports The Daily Star. They also recovered around five kilograms of explosives, four machetes, 14 different types of bombs, several jihadi books and a flag of “Bangladesh Jihadi Group”, a new platform formed by the banned militant outfits. Sheikh Sirajul Haque alias Siraj Master (73), Khan Akram Hossain (62) and Abdul Latif Talukder (69), face seven charges for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Bagerhat District during the Liberation War in 1971. Of the seven charges, four have been brought against Siraj alone for the killing of more than 600 people, two against all of them for the killing of 47 people, and one against Khan Akram and Abdul Latif for killing a person. Wrapping up its arguments, the prosecution sought capital punishment of the accused, claiming that they were able to prove all seven charges.
