The Daily Star reports on February 1 that the militants arrested on February 1 had plans to assassinate an editor of a leading national daily for publishing an article that allegedly criticised the ‘hadith on marriage’. The militants belonged to Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and were arrested on February 1 from Uttara suburbs of Dhaka. The arrestees were identified as Shahriar Nafis alias Ammar Hossain, Rasel alias Sajedul Islam Gifari Rabiul Islam alias Nurul Islam and Abdul Malek. According to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), ‘They had created a cell with 92 people. They had also been looking for arms and a suitable place in Patuakhali for to train themselves’. He also added that main plan of the outfit was to ensure the release of their jailed ‘chief’ Jashim Uddin Rahmani and they were collecting funds to do. Of the arrestees, Ammar joined the ABT in 2017. He was involved with the recruitment of new members to the outfit. He had opened five Facebook groups and kept an eye on secular online activists. He also recruited Rabiul. Rasel, a garment worker, who joined the ABT in 2017. Rasel who had recruited Malek was involved in raising funds and collecting funds.

Around 35 families who were displaced due to fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) in the Chin State, have entered Bangladesh to seek refuge, reports Dhaka Tribune on February 6. About 203 Myanmar nationals entered Bangladesh via Ruma upazila (sub-District) border area in Bandarban District. According to locals the refugees entered through the Remakree Prangsha border in the Ruma upazila on February 5. The Myanmar nationals belong to Buddhist ethnic groups Khumi, Khyan and Bawm and Rakhine have taken shelter in temporary tents in bordering Cheihkayingpara and adjoining villages.

According to an official ‘The number is increasing. Some people are already waiting on the border and they may also enter. We have asked them [Myanmar] to take effective and urgent steps so that violence is stopped’. Three eyewitnesses in the Holey Artisan attack gave their statement before a Dhaka court on February 6, Dhaka Tribune. Two witnesses identified as Mohamed Shamsuzzaman, brother of the slain assistant commissioner Rabiul Karim and his cousin Mollah Mohammed Anwarul Amin testified before the tribunal. The other witness was identified as Parvin. The trial against eight militants started on November 26, in the terror attack case. Six accused are now in jail while two accused are on the run.

Bangladesh wants a ‘safe haven’ for the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals in Rakhine state by ensuring their safe, secured and dignified repatriation under the monitoring of India, China and other ASEAN nations, reports New Age on February 9. ‘We want a safe haven for the Rohingya people in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and that haven has to be monitored by India, China and other ASEAN nations —As China and India are friendly to Myanmar, it may accept this proposal,’ said Bangladesh foreign minister AK Abdul Momen. Momen said that he requested his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj during their meeting yesterday (February 8) to take up the proposal with Myanmar’s foreign minister Aung San Suu Kyi about which the latter replied ‘let me see.’ ‘When I shared my idea to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi about ensuring a safe haven of Rohingyas in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, he described the idea as an ‘innovative’ one,’ he said. Law Minister Anisul Huq on February 10 told Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) that the Government will, through a legal process, settle the issue of trying Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) as a political party for its involvement in crimes against humanity, , reports Daily Star. In reply to a query from Awami League Member of Parliament Waresat Hossain Belal, the Law Minister informed that the Ministry will take initiative again to send the amendment to International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) law to the cabinet division, in line with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's direction so that it can be placed before the cabinet meeting. The HC may take at least three more months for releasing the full text of its verdict in the biggest ever criminal case in the country's history in terms of number of accused and convicts, Deputy Attorney General KM Zahid Sarwar Kazal told the newspaper on February 22. On November 27, 2017, the HC announced the verdict in which it awarded death penalty to 139 of the 152 accused who were earlier sentenced to capital punishment by a lower court for their involvement in the massacre during the BDR mutiny.
