Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on February 1 (today) arrested four Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants from Jatrabari area of Dhaka city, reports The Independent. The arrestees were identified as Ashfaq-e-Azam Apel, Shahinuzzaman, Ashraf Ali and Mahbubur Rahman. The arrestees are members of Neo JMB's Sarwar Tamim group while Ashfaq-e-Azam Apel is the chief of IT section of the militant group. RAB also recovered two pistols, 21 bullets, four sharp weapons, huge explosives, mobile phone sets and other electronic devices from their possessions.

Unidentified assailants hacked a local leader of ruling Awami League (AL) to death in Narail Sadar upazila (sub-district) of Narail District on February 1, reports New Age. The deceased was identified as Prabash Roy (50), president of Bhadrabila union unit of Awami League under sadar upazila. Sadar Police officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain Khan said a group of four to five assailants hacked Prabash near his residence at Mirapara while he was on his way to home. Police arrested five people including the union parishad chairman Shahidur Rahman Minar, and his son Ashik for their suspected involvement in the killing.

The United States of America’s (USA) State Department has assessed Dhaka as a “high-threat” location for political violence, terrorist activities and crimes directed at or affecting Washington's “official interests”, reports Daily Star. The department, which deals with America's global policies, made the assessment on Bangladesh in the 2017 Crime and Safety Report prepared and released by the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) on February 1.On terrorism threats, the report says the State Department alerts US citizens to concerns about ongoing potential for extremist violence in Bangladesh. It urges the US citizens who travel to Bangladesh to exercise appropriate cautions and maintain a high level of vigilance in light of the recent violent attacks.

Police on February 4 arrested 24 activists and leaders of Islami Samaj from Chittagong city of Chittagong District while holding a clandestine meeting and plotting for sabotage, reports The Daily Star. Police said that one Abdul Zabbar who was previously connected to JammateIslami (JeI) had founded the organisation, headquartered in Comilla District. Now it is being run by one Humayun Kabir who had connections with Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of JeI. The organisation has not been banned but was blacklisted by the law enforcing agencies for their suspicious activities. The members of the organisation do not believe in democracy and existing (liberal) laws and the governing system of the country. They want to accomplish an ‘Islami Khilafat’ in Bangladesh, replacing the current Government system.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressing as the chief guest the graduation ceremony of the Defence Services Command and Staff College Complex at Mirpur Cantonment in Dhaka city on February 8 has sought more cooperation from all including armed forces in combating militancy and terrorism to keep undisrupted the country’s ongoing development process, reports New Age. “We want to build Bangladesh as a developed, prosperous and peaceful country in South Asia in the spirit of the War of Liberation. So, we don’t want any incidents to happen that will impede the country’s ongoing development. The law enforcement agencies have been mobilized alongside creating social awareness against terrorism and militancy, while the armed forces have earned capability to this end. I would like to call upon all to build a resistance against terrorism and militancy from their respective positions side by side with creating awareness about the social vices,” she said.

The leaders were accused of arson with fire bombs and instigating violence across the country during a movement against the Awami League (AL)-led Government in 2013-14. Seven District and Session judges would be posted to the proposed special tribunals to try the cases, sources said. A total of 42 posts, including seven judges and an equal number of bench assistants, would be created for the new tribunals, the sources added.
