Bangladesh human rights defender, Odhikar in its review of human rights monitoring report for the first 31 days of 2013 on February 1, said that a total of 17 people were killed and 1643 others were injured in political violence in January in 27 incidents, reports The Independent. It was a rollover of political violence and criminalization of politics, which had claimed 775 lives from 2009-12, the trend continues at the beginning of the New Year in 2013 due to internal conflict of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) cadres and incidents of attacks on teachers, students and opponents. On the other hand, activists of the ICS took a destructive position in the name of political programmes, including hartal across the country and attacked police, while protesting the trials of JeI leaders in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

At least 41 persons were injured in clashes between the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres and the Police in the dawn-to-dusk general strike called by BNP on February 4 in 16 northern Districts of Bangladesh, reports New Age. 30 people were injured in Thakurgaon District, eight in Sirajganj District, two in Jaipurhat District and one woman in Bogra District. The opposition BNP called the general strike demanding the release of its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party leader Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu and withdrawal of the cases filed against them. All motorised vehicles remained off the roads and shops, markets and commercial establishments remained closed during the general strike in the 16 Districts. Banks, Government offices and educational institutions, however, remained open with a low transactions and thin attendance.

Tariqul said “BNP has no ideological similarity with JeI in demanding abolition of the ICTs as well as stopping the war crimes trial. We always want war crimes trial 100 percent.” The BNP leader, however, said the trial of those who committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 must be transparent, credible and of international standard. The trial can’t be held only to implement the agenda of a particular party.

At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on February 5 sentenced JeI leader Abdul Quader Mollah to life term imprisonment on war crimes charge, reports UNBConnect. The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Obaidul Hasan, pronounced the sentence after reading out a 132-page verdict. A total of 18 witnesses, 12 from the prosecution and 6 from the defence, testified in the case. In May 28, 2012, the tribunal indicted Quader Mollah for six offences of crimes against humanity, including killing, mass murder, conspiracy and instigation during the 1971 Liberation War. This is the second verdict of the ICT in connection with the crimes against humanity cases. On January 21, 2013, the same tribunal delivered its maiden verdict sentencing JeI leader Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu Razakar to death, in absentia.

Police arrested eight JeI-ICS cadres from Indira Road area of Dhaka city as the daylong shutdown called by JeI-ICS is going on almost peacefully across the country on February 28 (today). Police said the law enforcers picked the eight cadres up when they were trying to bring out a procession in Indira Road area. Police also fired several rounds from shotguns to disperse the hartal supporters. Huge contingents of law enforcers including Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were deployed at all the key points of the city to maintain law and order during hartal hours.

Separately, ending all speculations, the first war crimes tribunal on February 28 sentenced JeI leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee to death in its maiden verdict almost three years after its formation. The 73-year-old was found guilty of murder, abduction, confinement, torture, rape, persecution, and abetment of torture, looting, forceful religious conversions and setting homes ablaze in rural areas of southern District Pirojpur during the Liberation War. In the verdict, the judges of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) said, "The road to freedom for the people of Bangladesh was arduous and torturous, smeared with blood, toil and sacrifices. In the contemporary world history, perhaps no nation paid as dearly as the Bangalees did for their emancipation."
