Masud Miah, who functioned as the police super of Rajshahi district was found in nexus with the Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) ‘commander’ Bangla Bhai. In the other case, Abu Musa Md Fakhrul Islam, former police super of Habiganj district, was found neglecting his duties to ensure security in the public rally where former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria was assassinated on January 27, 2005.

According to Independent, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested nine Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants and recovered a huge quantity of bomb making materials from Syedpur in the Nilphamari district on February 6. Six JMB militants were arrested from Kazirhat following the information provided by three JMB cadres arrested near Syedpur railway station on the same day. RAB sources said that the six arrested militants had rented a house at Kazirhat and were planning to plant explosives in various places in the northern region. The arrested included a ‘divisional commander’, five ‘district commanders’ and three militants of the outfit’s suicide squad. The recovered bomb-making materials include 84 detonators, two pipe guns, four bullets, unspecified quantity of ammonium nitrate, power gel, batteries, circuits, tape and wires. A motorcycle and currency notes worth Taka 47,000 were also seized.

According to a Criminal Investigation Department report, a total of 214 cases were filed with different police stations across the country after the August 17 bombings. According to Independent, police and intelligence agencies in Bangladesh have failed to submit charge sheets in nearly half of the August 17, 2005 serial bombing cases under different police stations even after six months. According to a Criminal Investigation Development report of January 2006, a total of 214 cases were filed with different police stations across the country. Of them, 121 charge sheets were submitted and trial began in 31 of them. The remaining is still under investigation, the report said. In many of the cases where charge sheets were submitted to the relevant courts, authorities reportedly found them faulty and weak from the legal point of view.

Judge Anisur Rahman Khan of Jhenidah District and Sessions Judge's Court sentenced the 21 to death by hanging after they were found guilty of carrying out bomb blasts in Jhenidah.
