India and Bangladesh on December 5 decided to strengthen anti-terror mechanism besides increasing cooperation to deal with border crimes, including smuggling of arms, narcotics and cattle, reports Indian Express. Growing activities of Islamic State (IS) in Indian subcontinent, increased presence of Jehadi groups in Bangladesh and sharing of intelligence also dominated the Indo-Bangladesh Home Secretary level talks held in New Delhi. During the meeting, the two sides discussed working of institutional arrangements, security related issues, cooperation in prevention of illegal activities along the borders, border management issues, an official statement said. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mozammel Haque Khan led their respective teams in the talks. The talks were held in a cordial atmosphere and conducive to greater cooperation between the two countries, the statement said. Both sides flagged the menace of smuggling of cattle, narcotics and arms through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border and agreed to work together to check them. Bangladesh side requested for Indian cooperation in nabbing its most wanted criminals, especially those who were involved in war crimes and assassination of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Both sides exchanged notes about developments and investigations following the July 1 terror attack at a cafe in Dhaka. Bangladesh has been on edge ever since the terror attack.

International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on December 5 handed down death penalty to fugitive Edris Ali Sardar alias Gazi Edris (67) in absentia for crimes during the Liberation War in 1971, reports The Daily Star. It was the Hindus of Shariatpur District who were targeted by Sulaiman Mollah (84) and Edris during the Liberation War. With the intent to wipe out the Hindu community, the duo along with the Pakistan Army and their associates killed more than 200 Hindus in Palang of Shariatpur District and raped 15 Hindu women. Their atrocities forced around 1,500 Hindus to leave the country. The ICT-1 did not hold Sulaiman responsible for the crimes as he had died of old age complications on October 26 during the closing arguments of the case. The court handed down death penalty to Edris for two charges in connection with two acts of genocide. Edris, who was a leader of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), joined Razakar force in 1971. He was given jail until death for another charge related to the killing of two Hindus and looting of Hindu houses. He was also jailed for seven years for forcing the Hindus to leave the country. The tribunal also directed the Home Secretary and the Inspector General of Police to ensure his arrest and, if need be, take the Interpol's help.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while addressing a discussion on the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals Day at Krishibid Institution in Dhaka city on December 14 said the trial of war criminals involved in genocide, killing of intellectuals and opposing the independence of the country must continue, reports The Independent. "No one will be able to save them [war criminals]. Whatever the tactics and conspiracy they devise, the trial will go on. I think the time has come; the people will have to be vocal. Those who nourished the war criminals, gave them the political rights in the country gave them flag, are the same criminals. They didn’t want the country’s independence and they also do not like development of the country," she said.
