At least 26 Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadres, including one Afghan war veteran and two suicide bombers, were arrested from the Mymensingh district on the same day. "The youths, all aged between 16 and 30, were taking lessons on combat using bamboo sticks when we raided the place," said a RAB official. Some electric wires, several small bulbs, three mobile SIMs, pieces of iron used in fishing nets, several transistor circuits and one container of powder were recovered from the arrested militants.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel recovered two firearms, including an M-16 rifle, and 373 bullets from an abandoned bungalow in the remote Charer Khil village in Fatikchhari sub-district of Khagrachari district in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) on August 7, according to Daily Star. According to RAB sources, following the recovery, the security force personnel raided the house of Kafil Uddin in the same village and recovered one double-barrel gun and 373 bullets of M-16. The operation was reportedly launched following the confessional statement of Nasirul Islam alias Shawkat and Jamal Mohammad Tuhin, two close associates of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadre Nasir. They had been arrested on March 18 this year at Kathgar under Patenga in the Fatikchari city with two AK-47 rifles.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police on August 10 arrested seven Hizb-ut Tawhid militants, including an engineer of Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited and a sales manager of Suncrest Cola, during separate raids in different areas of the port city. Police sources identified the militants as Abdul Hamid Mian of Tangail, Humayun Kabir of Munshiganj, Munir Khan and Mohammad Akkas of Barisal, Nurul Islam Khokon of Khulna, Jamal Uddin of Laxmipur, and Mohammad Raju of Satkhira. Police also seized around 200 leaflets and books on Jihad from the militants.

According to Daily Star, army personnel recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the deep forest in Ali Kadam sub-district of Bandarban district near Myanmar border on August 17. The seized arms and ammunition include three AK47 assault rifles, two M16 assault rifles, two light machine guns (LMG), six sub-machine guns (SMG), one 40mm rocket launcher, 11 40mm shells, five US-made rocket launchers and five shells, 6,750 bullets, and 2,000 bullets of LMG and SMG each. The army also recovered 21 magazines of various kinds of firearms and 20 link belts. Captain Saif of the Army said "The team led by Lt Col Azimullah Bahar is still searching the area 31km off the Ali Kadam headquarters.”

The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), during a public rally in Dhaka on August 17, has claimed to have destroyed the militant network in the country. Speakers, including the BNP President and Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, also claimed that Bangladesh is the only country where militant leaders have been captured and brought to trial. BNP Secretary General and Local Government and Rural Development Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said, "A certain quarter tried to project Bangladesh as a fundamentalist and ineffective state. But it (Bangladesh) stands firmly as an effective and democratic state." Addressing the rally, Health and Family Planning Minister and a top leader of the BNP, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, said, "Countries like USA and UK could not arrest any militant kingpin but we have done that."

Police on August 18 arrested four members of the Hizb-ut Tawhid at Banaripara sub-district of Barisal while they were distributing leaflets and books on Jihad, according to Daily Star. The arrested cadres were identified as Motaleb Hawlader, Abul Hossain Sikder, Masud Ahmed and Abu Hassan Hawlader. All of them hail from Uzirpur sub-district. Police sources said one of the four arrested, Abu Hassan Hawlader was arrested after the August 17, 2005 serial blasts and later released on bail.

According to Daily Star, militants of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) have managed to regroup in the Islampur-Bakal area of Satkhira district. Recently, they were involved in two attacks on Rawshan Ali, a key witness of an August 17, 2005 serial blasts case, at Islampur in the Sadar sub-district. JMB militants have also reportedly filed a case against Ali accusing him of extortion. The witness had identified JMB activist Nasir Uddin Dafadar, who blasted a bomb on August 17, 2005 in the Satkhira court premises. Ali had also helped the police arrest other JMB militants following the attacks.

The government, however, has claimed ignorance about the meeting. State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar said on August 20 that he learnt about the meeting from newspaper reports on August 19. The report says that police did not even file a General Diary against them. So far only 11 arrested persons have been taken on remand for questioning. Police sources said that they are waiting for reports confirming whether the material seized were explosives.
