According to Daily Star, investigations into the largest arms smuggling case in Chittagong have indicated that some ruling alliance leaders were in charge of handling the consignment after its delivery at high sea from a cargo ship bound for Chittagong port. The intelligence officials have reportedly alleged that labour leader Dil Mohammad who is linked to Jamaat-e-Islami employed workers at Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited jetty on the Karnaphuli to offload the arms from two fishing trawlers and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Hafiz Mohammad supervised the clandestine operation. Customs officials are also examining the documents of three vessels -- two fishing trawlers and a ship owned by a top BNP leader -- believed to have been used in the smuggling. A local BNP legislator's brother is alleged to have been instrumental in the transport of the cache after its delivery. He is suspected to be running a large smuggling syndicate on Anwara and Patiya coasts allegedly in collusion with law enforcement agencies.

Daily Star reports that police personnel have arrested three persons on April 7 in connection with the arms haul seized from Chittagong. A section of intelligence forces claims consignment was heading for Bandarban, report adds. Police has also reportedly obtained a court order to attach the property of Din Mohammad, owner of so-called business establishment Friends' Syndicate in the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited jetty area. This syndicate allegedly controls smuggling in the coastal areas of Anowar, Patiya and Karnaphuli and was involved with the gunrunning. The report further says that a section in an unnamed intelligence agency believed the arms and ammunition had come from Akiab Port of Myanmar and the two seized fishing vessels -- FV Khazar Dan and FV Amanat -- carried the cache. The report also mentions unnamed sources in Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Chittagong as claiming that the consignment of the illegal weapons was reportedly dispatched from China and it reached Myanmar by land. But it was not sure whether the haul was offloaded at the outer anchorage of Akiab Port or Chittagong Port.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), a member of Bangladesh’s ruling coalition, has denied it is running "11 secret arms training camps" across the country. The Pakistani newspaper Daily Times quoting an AFP report said that the claims, made by leader of Bangladesh’s main opposition Awami League party, Sheikh Hasina Wajed, were denied by Jamaat as being "malicious" and "untrue." Sheikh Hasina told reporters on April 6 following a tour of the south of the country that JeI had 11 camps spread across Bangladesh. "We don’t know why they have these camps, but we are very concerned," Abdul Jalil, the Awami League’s general secretary said on April 8. "Whether it is for gaining power or for an Islamic revolution is the big question," he told AFP. However, Social Welfare Minister and JeI Secretary General, Ali Ahsan Mujahid, denied these accusations.

The head of the five-member official inquiry committee, Home Secretary Omar Farooq, has stated that their probe so far in the April 2 weapons haul from Chittagong has revealed no political link contrary to the allegations of both Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Awami League, the Daily Star has reported. After ascertaining circumstantial evidences, the committee concluded that three men -- Din Mohammed, a labour contractor, Haji Sobhan, proprietor of a trawler, and Hafizuddin, owner of a car found near the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL) jetty -- were involved in the arms smuggling. Farooq also claimed that the committee would be able to disclose the destination of the arms once any one of the three men was arrested. However, he ruled out any police negligence.

According to a report in Independent, the left-wing 11-party alliance has alleged that the Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) is developing an ‘Islamic militant network’ across the country by taking advantage of being a partner in the alliance Government. It has accused the armed militant groups of Jamaat and its students’ front ICS, referred to as Mujahideen, of creating panic in different parts of Bangladesh, especially in the northern districts. They have demanded action against all those, including a Deputy Minister and the police, involved in creating a reign of terror in Natore, Naogaon and Rajshahi. In a written statement, Morshed Ali Khan, Coordinator of the 11-party alliance, alleged that armed fundamentalist groups are being patronised by Deputy Minister Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, other influential BNP leaders of Rajshahi and the local police.
