According to media reports of September 1, National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) terrorists of the Biswamohan faction killed five of their colleagues, including three women, at their Boalcherri training camp in Bangladesh. The terrorists were part of a group of nine that had left the camps on August 13, 2002, in order to get married. They were, however, caught by other terrorists of the group, dragged back to the camps and shot dead, on August 17. The fate of the remaining four remains unknown yet.

She also said the attack and the subsequent violence were engineered to sully the image of her coalition government. She alleged it was a conspiracy to destabilize Bangladesh and her government. Two extortionists were arrested for attempting to extort money from the acting Registrar of Khulna University (KU). The two were apprehended in his office when they went to collect Taka 5,000, on September 7. The extortionists were first held by the University staff and were later handed over to police. The extortionists are allegedly activists of the outlawed Purba Bangla Communist Party (PBCP). A case has been filed against them with Batiaghata police station under the Speedy Trial Act.

Armed activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) killed an activist of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and injured 10 others on the Madan Mohan College premises in Sylhet, on September 9, media reports said. Two of the injured have been hospitalised. The incident led to counter attacks on ICS activists and the ransacking of a Jamaat-e- Islami leader's house. Arson has been reported in other parts of the town, too. Security has been intensified in the town and eight persons have been arrested in this regard. Reportedly, trouble started when ICS activists prevented some JCD cadres from going to a meeting, besides attacking them.

Speakers at a roundtable in Dhaka, held on September 9, suggested a comprehensive strategy for the global fight against terrorism, which includes democracy, the rule of law, alleviation of poverty, dialogue and understanding. Bangladeshi intellectuals and US Ambassador in Dhaka, Mary Ann Peters, participated in the roundtable sponsored by the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA). The issue of an internationally accepted definition of terrorism and its links with root causes like poverty and absence of good governance was discussed. Speakers reiterated the commitment of Bangladesh to the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Two members of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), also known as the Sarbahara Party were arrested from the Padma residential area in Rajshahi district, on September 12. Leaflets, posters and other documents were recovered from their possession. The arrests were a result of combing operation launched consequent to the extremists committing several murders in Raninagar, Atrai and Bagmara upazilas (sub-divisions). Reportedly, some vital information on the activities of the PBCP in Rajshahi district has been gathered from the documents that have been seized.

Reports added the security forces (SFs) are yet to arrest a single hardcore extremist or a high-ranking party leader. However, despite the SFs being on a high alert, PBCP extremists have managed to dodge the law enforcing agencies, reports further added.
