On October 1, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) intelligence officials arrested the 'operation commander' of the Bangladesh chapter of the Harkatul Jihad, Mufti Abdul Hannan from Madhya Badda in Dhaka city. After the arrest, Hannan reportedly told the media at the Rab office in Dhaka that he has been staying in the country after the former home minister, now the commerce minister, Altaf Hossain Choudhury, assured him of 'no fear' in staying in the country. "Editor of monthly Madina, Moulana Mohiuddin played the mediator between me and the home minister," Hannan added. Accused in a sedition case, Mufti Hannan is also the prime accused in the plot to assassinate the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina in Kotalipara in Gopalganj on July 20, 2000.

In Chittagong, six suspects were arrested following the explosion inside the courtroom soon after a JMB cadre linked to the August 17 incident was produced in court. Senior Assistant Commissioner Mosharraf Hossain Meazi of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police said, "The citizens had crossed the border at Teknaf three months back and came to the city from Teknaf three to four days ago to go to Saudi Arabia illegally with the help of a broker." According to Independent, on October 30, Shahidullah, a self-styled commander of the Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), in charge of Chapainawabaganj district revealed vital information about the activities of the outfit and its involvement in the countrywide August 17 bomb blasts. In a confessional statement before a magistrate of the Rajshahi court, he said that a secret meeting was held on August 13 at Nur Mahal in the Natore district, which was attended by JMB commanders of 16 northern districts. A written message by the JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman was read out at the meeting in which the leader said that JMB should demonstrate its power through countrywide terror attacks.
