Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid (34), a militant of Ansar Al Islam was arrested on November 5 in connection with the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy in the Dhaka city's Mohammadpur area on February 26, 2015, reports The Daily Star. In his statement recorded by Metropolitan Magistrate Ahsan Habib, Sakib said eight people participated in the operation. Four, including him, were following Avijit at the venue of Amar Ekushey Book Fair on February 26, 2015. Four others, who were outside the venue, took part in the killing mission. He claimed that he did not know much about the seven others.

A Dhaka court on November 6 sentenced four militants of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 12 years' rigorous imprisonment in a case filed for possessing grenades and explosives in August 2007, reports The Daily Star. The convicts are: Isahak Sheikh, Anach Ali, Mohamad Rafiqul Islam and Khalil Mia. According to the prosecution, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided a house in Pallabi on August 2, 2007, and arrested the four along with grenades and bomb-making materials.

Government on November 7 (today) shut down Lakehead Grammar School for patronizing militancy, reports Dhaka Tribune. In a letter signed by the Education Ministry’s Joint Secretary Salma Jahan, the Ministry said the school had not taken approval from the Government and ordered the Dhaka District Administration to shut down the Lakehead Grammar School for patronizing militancy and involvement in ‘anti-liberation’ activities. According to the letter, the school was inspiring religious extremism, building extremist organizations, and carrying out activities against the nation and its independence.

In Narayanganj District, RAB conducted a raid at Signboard area in Shiddhirganj and arrested Sayed Rayhan Kabir alias Rayhan (28). RAB recovered local weapons, jihadi books and leaflets from his possession. Sabbir had planned to crash an aircraft on the residence of Prime Minister in a similar manner to infamous terror attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11, 2001. Sabbir is a first officer of the national flag carrier arrested on October 31 for plotting to carry out sabotage with aircraft.

Syed Rezaur Rahman, chief prosecutor in its arguments in the August 21, 2004, grenade attack case, on November 8 said a total of five local and foreign extremist outfits were involved in the barbaric attack that killed 24 leaders and activists of Awami League (AL), reports New Age. “Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), Kashmir-based separatist organizations, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Tehrik-e-Jehad-e-Islami (TeJI), Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), and Myanmar-based Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) were involved in the monstrous attack,” the chief prosecutor said. “Apart from these groups, Pakistan intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and then Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) alliance Government orchestrated the attack. The then Government used Ministry of Home Affairs, DGFI, NSI and Bangladesh Police in executing the conspiracy,” he added.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque while addressing a community policing gathering on terrorism and drug abuse at Shibganj Stadium in Chapainawabganj District as the chief guest on November 9 said that militants a are trying to reorganize, reports The Daily Star. “Militants are not that strong now. Although they are trying to reorganise, we have broken their strength,” he said. The IGP said most of the militants arrested across the country are from Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. The tribunal took the decision as the accused did not appear before it even after publication of advertisements in national dailies. The fugitives are ASM Faizullah (66), Abdur Razzak Mandal (64), Alim Uddin Khan (77), Abdul Latif (58), Nurul Amin Shahjahan (69) and Sirajul Islam (66). Other five accused of the case are now in jail. International Crimes Tribunal -1 (ICT-1) on November 22 handed death sentence to former Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Member of Parliament (MP) Abu Saleh Mohammad Abdul Aziz Mia alias Ghoramara Aziz (65) and five others finding them guilty of committing crimes against humanity at different places under the then Gaibandha Sadar and Sundarganj thanas in what was then Gaibandha sub-division during the Liberation War in 1971, reports New Age. Mohamad Abdul Latif (61), the lone convict now in jail custody, looked pensive in the dock as he listened to the verdict pronouncement that the convicts’ death would be carried out by hanging. The other convicts, Aziz, Mohamad Ruhul Amin alias Monju (61), Mohamad Abdul Latif (61), Abu Muslim Mohammad Ali (59), Mohamad Nazmul Huda (60) and Mohamad Abdur Rahim Miah (62), were tried in absentia as they are absconding. The tribunal directed the Home Secretary and the Inspector General of Police to nab the absconding convicts. The verdict said that the six were found guilty of the three charges. This was the 29th verdict in as many war crimes cases on Bangladesh’s free soil. It was ICT-1’s 18th verdict. Until now, 59 war offenders were convicted, 37 of them to death while 22 others were jailed.

To this end, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on November 22 approved a BTK 38.5 crore project to buy necessary equipment, including mobile phone and wi-fi network interceptors. The devices will be bought under the direct procurement method. The sophisticated equipment (interceptors) will help the intelligence agency trace such criminals quickly. They can be tracked down through monitoring their mobile phones and internet activities.

Dhaka High Court on November 27 uphold death for 139 out of 152 accused who were sentenced to death by a Dhaka court in a case filed over the killing of 74 army officers and civilians during the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny, reports Dhaka Tribune. Eight of the 13 other accused were sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court. The court acquitted four. Another accused had died during the trial. The High Court also sent a total of 185 accused to jail for life, awarded different prison terms to 196 and acquitted 49 others. Six among the 846 accused in the case had died during the course of the trial. They were exempted from the charges.

The RAB could not immediately identify the bodies. They were unrecognizable due to the powerful blasts. The explosion also put the thatched house they were in on fire.
