Police have cane-charged and detained activists of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) at Muktangan in Dhaka on May 1, reports bdnews24. Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police on April 30 had banned all types of public gathering in the city's Muktangan from 6am on May 1 until further notice. The restriction was imposed to maintain law and order as IAB and several other parties called rallies there on May 1 and 2. According to All Headlines News, a Police spokesperson said nearly 200 protestors were wounded during the class with Riot-Police. An estimated 150 Islamic activists were detained, whisked away in prison vans.

Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy said they freed them as their senior leaders gave undertakings assuring that the detainees will not involve in any activities in a bid to deteriorate law and order.

An investigation officer (IO) of 21 August Grenade Attack case told a Dhaka Court that Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) leader Maulana Sheikh Farid was directly involved with the attack on an Awami League (AL) rally in 2004. Moreover, he will be cross-examined with another HuJI-B leader Mufti Abdul Hannan Sabbir, now on remand in the case filed for bomb blasts on a rally of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) at Paltan Maidan (Dhaka city) on January 20, 2001. The Court granted a four-day remand for further investigation.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Ameer (chief) Motiur Rahman Nizami on May 5 admitted during interrogation that he was involved with Al-Badr and Al-Shams in 1971 under 'death threat', reports Daily Star. He also admitted that genocide, mass rape and killing of country’s intellectual took place during the Liberation War but denied his involvement in such heinous activities. The JeI Chief however claimed he "had to be involved" with Al-Badr and Al-Shams, auxiliary forces of Pakistani Occupation Army, in the face of death threats. The investigation agency said they would again appeal to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for permission to quiz Nizami for what they said he did not give a clear picture about his role in 1971.

He, however, denied his involvement in killing and other crimes against humanity during the Liberation War. The prosecution on May 9 pressed charges against 463 out of accused 848 soldiers and staff of the Bangladesh Rifles, now renamed as Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), and some civilians who were their accomplices, arguing that they should be charged with murder, arson, robbery and other crimes committed during the rebellion in the BGB Headquarters in Dhaka in February 25-26, 2009, according to New Age. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) pressed charges in the two cases against 850 accused — one under the Penal Code for murder, arson, robbery and other crimes, and the other under the Explosive Substances Act for illegally taking up arms. Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) ‘Secretary General’ Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed was shown arrested on May 15, in one of the two cases filed for the grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) rally on August 21, 2004, reports Daily Star. Metropolitan Magistrate passed the order following an appeal by Criminal Investigation Department's (CID), filed under Explosive Substances Act. The Investigation Officer, in his plea mentioned that ‘Chief’ of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), Mufti Abdul Hannan Sabbir, in his statement on April 7 disclosed five names, including Mojaheed, who were involved in the attack. During investigation they also revealed the names of the grenade suppliers and the patrons of the attack that killed 23 people including AL leader Ivy Rahman and injured many including Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader. Al Markajul Islam’s Vice-chairman Maulana Abdul Rashid also gave statements before a magistrate in connection with the attack.
